Springtails FAQ
Do springtails get rid of mould?
Yes, springtails help control mould in terrariums by feeding on fungal spores, decaying plant matter and organic waste. They will not remove heavy mould instantly, but they help prevent it from spreading and keep your setup balanced over time. For best results, combine springtails with good airflow and avoid overwatering.
Are springtails safe for terrariums?
Yes, springtails are completely safe for terrariums, vivariums and plants. They live in the soil layer and do not harm plants, roots or decor. In fact, they are beneficial and are widely used in bioactive setups to maintain a clean and healthy ecosystem.
How many springtails do I need?
A small starter culture is usually enough for most terrariums. Springtails reproduce quickly and will naturally adjust their population based on available food and space. For small to medium terrariums, one culture is ideal. For larger setups or heavily planted bioactive environments, you may want to add more to establish the colony faster.
Our springtails come in a selected plastic container with a lid. Each container usually includes springtails at different stages of growth. The mature springtails are the easiest to spot as they are larger and white, while the younger ones are much smaller and may be less visible. Springtails usually have a lifespan of around one year. If you order a larger quantity, we may package them in zip bags or larger containers instead.
Keep in mind that springtails reproduce rapidly, so starting with a smaller population can help maintain a balanced ecosystem. As the population grows, the springtails will self-regulate based on available resources and will not overpopulate even in smaller containers.
To introduce springtails to your terrarium, add the culture medium to the soil layer or place it on top of the potting mix or moss. Make sure the substrate is moist before adding them so they can settle in and thrive.
- How should I introduce springtails into my terrarium or vivarium?
- Upon receiving your springtails, transfer the medium they are in directly to your terrarium, either mixing it with the soil or laying it on top of the potting mix or moss. Ensure the soil is moist to provide an ideal environment for them to thrive.
- What is the ideal container size of springtails for my set-up?
- Choose 1oz for small containers, 2oz for medium containers or to split between smaller terrariums, and 4oz for large terrariums or to distribute among multiple smaller setups. Starting with a smaller amount is often sufficient as springtails reproduce quickly.
- How do I care for springtails during extreme weather conditions?
- Avoid exposing the springtails to extreme temperatures by maintaining a stable environment away from direct sunlight and severe cold or heat. Open the parcel immediately upon delivery to ensure their health and safety.
