    Hidden Scotland – Issue 04

    £15.00

We are delighted to introduce Hidden Scotland magazine to our shop. This is a fantastic way of learning more about the hidden gems all over Scotland. Every edition is packed with content and it doesn’t matter which issue you buy, you are sure to find something you never knew about before!

From the editors of Hidden Scotland:

Here’s a fact that may (or, indeed, may not) surprise you. Scotland plays home to an astonishing 8% of Europe’s coastline, the country’s cliffs, bays, beaches and inlets stretching for a collective total of some 19,000km. This endlessly explorable shoreline features heavily in the magazine, with visits to the fascinating islands of Easdale and Jura, a conjuring of folklore from the Isle of Skye, and a vivid look at some of our spectacular coastal wildlife, from minke whales to gannets. There’s also an account of the 1338 siege of salty-aired Dunbar Castle, and the heroic role played in its defence by Agnes Randolph.

But that’s just the start. If Scotland goes big on its coast, it also goes big on creativity. We profile illustrator Johanna Basford – whose intricately styled colouring books have sold tens of millions of copies – meet photographer Soo Burnell, and showcase the stunning wooden furniture produced by Braemar’s Tor Workshop. Elsewhere, we meet some of the inspiring creatives doing incredible work in Fife, among them organic brewers Futtle.

And the Kingdom isn’t the only region in the spotlight. We take an in-depth look at the myriad riches of Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, from its cultural highlights and characterful villages (one of which, Crovie, graces the front cover of this issue) to its family attractions and trend-setting food and drink outlets. And on the subject of a good meal, we also explore some of the country’s best restaurants with rooms. Apologies in advance if it makes you hungry.

The contents list doesn’t end there. You’ll also find a special focus on some of the nation’s most iconic pieces of architecture, and a piece examining the timeless allure of visiting Scotland’s castles, among other features. And did someone mention fennel seed and lemon pastries? (Recipe on page 136 – and be warned, they’re seriously good.)

    Hidden Scotland – Issue 03

We’ll start with four potent words: the past is alive. Scotland is a land sculpted by its history, a place moulded by the passage of time, and over the following pages, the days of yore are a recurrent theme. Stepping back into the mists of prehistory, we explore the Jurassic beginnings of the Isle of Skye, where dinosaurs once roamed. We enter the towering canopy of the great Caledonian Forest, crunching the underbrush of the temperate rainforest that once blanketed almost the entire country. No less stirringly, we also take a wander among the extraordinary Neolithic sites that make Scotland one of the world’s most important repositories of Stone Age architecture.

Striding forward to more recent centuries, we visit the historic towns and age-old places of worship that mark the Borders Abbeys Way, learn more about the 17th century witches of Shetland, and discover the layered past (not to mention the vibrant culture and open countryside) of Dumfries & Galloway. Keeping the theme going, we also hear the ancient tale of Thomas the Rhymer, and take a winding drive along the fabled Highlands road that is Bealach na Bà.

But there’s more to these pages, of course, than the past. As regular readers will have come to expect, we also meet some of Scotland’s most inspirational modern-day inhabitants, from the sustainably minded food and drink producers of Glenelg, and the determined founders of the Isle of Skye Sea Salt Company, to acclaimed jewellery-maker Róis Clark.

And that’s not all. Among other things, there’s also a journey through Cape Wrath in the company of writer and photographer Richard Gaston, a spotlight on one of the country’s enigmatic mountain hares, and advice on how to make the most of the Scottish winter with your canine companion.

As ever, enjoy the journey. Slàinte mhath

And that’s not all. Within the pages of this issue you’ll also find age-old folklore, a stirring account of a trip to Fair Isle, a shortbread recipe from the kitchen of Great British Bake Off finalist Flora Shedden, and a tour of Argyll’s storied castles with ‘The Castle Hunter’, David C. Weinczok. Should you be planning a getaway of your own, meanwhile, we’ve hand-picked 12 of Scotland’s most remote accommodation retreats. We think you’ll be glad to know about them.

We hope you enjoy the journey.

    Hidden Scotland – Issue 02

Spring is a time of rebirth, renewal and revisitation – and our candy-striped cover star is a fine example. When puffins and other nesting seabirds return to Scotland for their annual residency, it’s a sure sign that the seasons are shifting. For those brief, bright few months, their busy island colonies are a reassurance that the world keeps turning.

Aptly, the themes of nature and connection run through this issue. We look at ways in which you can allow your feral side some freedom – and boost your wellbeing – with a focus on wild foraging from expert Leanne Townsend, and a wild swimming feature from acclaimed Taking the Plunge author Anna Deacon, evoking the mixture of calm and euphoria that follows a dip. Adding to the mix is a piece by Emily Rose Mawson on that most elusive of Scottish animals: the wildcat.

Elsewhere, we continue to shine a light on the country’s different faces, not only showcasing the elemental beauty of its furthest-flung coastlines but exploring the dynamic urban spirit that keeps Glasgow as one of the UK’s most exciting cities. Island life, too, plays a prominent part. On Shetland, locals Misa Hay and Garry Jamieson introduce us to the archipelago’s deep-rooted knitting traditions, tracing the timeless evolution of island wool from sheep to sweater. Back on the mainland, meanwhile, we follow a creative heritage of a different kind, with a journey of discovery through Speyside’s world-famous malt whisky distilleries.
