• Springtails Collembola For Bio-Active Terrarium Vivarium

Springtails Collembola For Bio-Active Terrarium Vivarium

    £3.00

Springtails are an essential cleaning crew for bioactive terrariums and vivariums. They help break down organic matter and support a healthier, more balanced environment. Our springtails come in a carefully selected plastic container with a lid. As they are very small and quick-moving, we cannot guarantee an exact number in each container.

How many springtails do you need for your terrarium?

1oz is best for smaller containers
2oz is ideal for medium terrariums or for splitting between smaller setups
4oz is suitable for larger terrariums or for dividing between several smaller terrariums

Each container includes a live springtail starter culture in a soil based living medium. Springtails are tiny and are not individually counted, so we cannot guarantee a minimum number of visible springtails in each container. Adult numbers can naturally vary, and the culture may also contain juveniles and eggs hidden within the medium.

The 1oz size is ideal for seeding a small terrarium, moss bowl, small vivarium or bioactive setup.

The 2oz size includes more living medium and is better suited for medium terrariums, larger moss bowls, vivariums or customers who would like a stronger starter culture.

The 4oz size is our largest option and is ideal for larger bioactive setups, bigger terrariums, multiple small enclosures, or anyone who wants to establish a springtail colony more quickly.

Once added to a suitable moist environment with a food source, the springtails should continue to reproduce and help break down decaying organic matter, mould and waste.

Isopods Clean-up Crew For Bio-Active Terrarium Vivarium

    From: £3.00

We offer 24-hour shipping. Please open the parcel immediately upon receipt. Avoid exposing them to extreme temperatures, such as heat or cold, and direct sunlight. If the isopods don’t move please leave them in a suitable environment (warm and dark spot) for a few hours as sometimes they play dead when disturbed. Please DO NOT soak in water, move into extremely hot environment or try to spread their legs with tweezers. Mock dead is pretty common and natural for the species which we breed.

Optimal temperature for the isopods is 21-27°C. During cold weather please add a Heatpacks. Isopods purchased without the heatpack are excluded from our refund policy when arriving dead.

Our Isopds come in a 4oz (7.5cm x 4.7cm x 4.5cm) paper pulp container with a lid. You will receive isopods, mixed species, colours and sizes. The quantity is sufficient for one medium-sized terrarium such as the one linked here.

    What are Isopods?

Isopods are members of the crustacean family, which includes also crabs, shrimp and lobsters. These small, land-dwelling arthropods have segmented bodies, with multiple legs and antennae. Their exoskeletons offer protection, and they come in a variety of colours and sizes, making them visually appealing additions to any terrarium and mossarium.

The Role of Isopods in Terrariums

Isopods play a crucial role in maintaining a balanced ecosystem within a terrarium. They are detritivores, meaning they feed on decaying organic matter, such as fallen leaves, dead plants, and faecal matter. In other words, clean your terrariums and mossariums! They help in the decomposition process and release essential nutrients back into the soil.

Additionally, isopods aerate the substrate as they burrow, promoting healthier root growth for plants. Their constant activity also benefits the terrarium’s microfauna, as they become a source of food for various creatures, like small reptiles and amphibians.

Bought five houses for my partner’s five siblings who I was visiting in Catalonia, so four are in various villages there and one will go back with his sister to Vienna. Pam added a wee bit of moss to each one, they travelled no problem and each family member loved them and I hope will be a lovely reminder of our visit, far more memorable than an Aberdeen tea towel! Bought a coloured moss frame and a terrarium for my partner’s mum as below, which is sitting pride of place in Sant Vicenç de Torelló!
