RHS 2025
Moss is back & it’s thriving
At the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2025, moss is no longer the green underdog but a celebrated feature across some of the show’s most talked-about gardens. We’re proud to share that Highland Moss, based in Aberdeen, has supplied a variety of sustainably sourced Scottish moss to several exhibits this year, including The Wildlife Trusts’ British Rainforest Garden designed by Zoe Claymore.
We were also recently featured in a Daily Mail article about the surge in moss popularity—you can read it here: Why Moss is No Longer the Enemy in the Garden

Why Moss Is Growing in Popularity
The rising interest in moss is no coincidence. We believe it’s strongly linked to biophilia—the natural human instinct to connect with nature. In an increasingly digital and urban world, people are looking for ways to add calm, living elements to their homes and outdoor spaces. Moss, with its soft texture, deep green colour, and ancient beauty, meets that need perfectly.
As one of the oldest plant groups on Earth—over 450 million years old—moss has always held a place in natural landscapes. Now, people are bringing it into modern settings through terrariums, kokedama, moss bowls, and even moss lawns.
Where to Buy Scottish Moss for Gardens, Terrariums & Displays
At Highland Moss, we offer a carefully curated selection of fresh, sustainably harvested Scottish moss—used by professional designers at RHS Flower Shows, BBC Gardeners’ World Live, and more. Our moss is ideal for a wide range of projects including terrariums, kokedamas, moss art, moss lawns, and shaded garden beds.
Our current fresh moss range includes:
- Sphagnum Moss (Sphagnum spp.) – Ideal for moisture-loving plants, kokedamas, and orchid growing
- Cushion Moss (Leucobryum glaucum) – A compact, vibrant moss perfect for terrariums and moss bowls
- Sheet Moss (Hypnum cupressiforme) – Great for lining baskets, living walls, and woodland-style gardens
- Feather Moss (Pleurozium schreberi) – A soft-textured moss, available seasonally
- Waved Silk-moss (Plagiothecium undulatum) – Known for its beautifully rippled leaves and striking colour variation, perfect for adding texture and interest to naturalistic designs
All of our moss is sustainably sourced in Scotland, hand-selected for quality and freshness, and packaged using eco-conscious materials.
We offer fast UK-wide shipping and are always happy to provide advice on which moss is best for your project.

Moss at RHS Chelsea & BBC Gardeners’ World Live
Our work with RHS is part of a growing trend. In recent years, Highland Moss has been chosen by top designers for show gardens that champion nature, sustainability, and inclusivity:
2023 – we supplied moss for The Caley Brothers’ Project Mushrooms
2024 – our moss featured in The National Autistic Society Garden, designed by Sophie Parmenter and Dido Milne
2025 – we’re supporting multiple gardens at RHS Chelsea Flower Show, including The Wildlife Trusts’ British Rainforest Garden by Zoe Claymore
We’ve also supported moss-based displays at BBC Gardeners’ World Live Show and other exhibitions
Moss is no longer just a backdrop—it’s becoming the star of the show.
A Message from Highland Moss
“As people seek out more sustainable, mindful ways to garden, moss has quietly become one of the most loved elements in modern design. Our terrarium and kokedama workshops sell out fast, and every year around RHS season, our moss orders surge from designers, florists, and landscapers. We’re seeing a huge shift in how people view moss—not as a weed, but as a living, breathing part of the ecosystem. It’s soft, soothing, and incredibly resilient. This year, we’re also collaborating with Zoe Claymore on a new British Rainforest – How to Guide, and we’ll be offering an exclusive discount to help people explore moss gardening in their own homes.
– Pam, Co-founder of Highland Moss”
Benefits of Moss in the Garden
Moss isn’t just beautiful—it’s eco-friendly, low-maintenance, and good for biodiversity. Here’s why moss is becoming a gardener’s best friend:
- Carbon-absorbing and oxygen-producing
- Helps prevent soil erosion and retain moisture
- Encourages biodiversity by creating microhabitats
- Stays green year-round in the right conditions
- Doesn’t require mowing or chemical fertilisers
For urban gardens, shaded patios, and modern green spaces, moss offers a sustainable alternative to grass—especially in areas where traditional lawns struggle.
