A natural moss mulch made from lower grade live carpet moss and forest substrate, ideal for creating a moisture-retaining base layer for moss gardens, shaded borders, hanging baskets, planters and outdoor moss projects.
This is not premium display moss. It contains imperfect moss, forest floor material, soil, bark, grass, dry patches and other natural elements from the harvesting process. It is best used as a substrate layer, recovery moss, garden mulch, hanging basket liner or base material for projects where appearance is not the main focus.
Each bag weighs approximately 10kg and is packed loose in a green garden sack.
Our Live Moss Mulch is a practical, budget-friendly option for gardeners, landscapers and moss lovers who want a natural base layer for outdoor moss projects.
This product is made from lower grade live carpet moss mixed with natural forest substrate. It may include soil, bark, grass, dry moss, discoloured patches, small twigs, leaf litter and other organic material collected during the harvesting process. Instead of being sold as premium decorative moss, it is offered as a useful moss mulch and substrate material for projects where the moss does not need to look perfect on arrival.
Moss Mulch is especially useful when setting out fresh moss in shaded gardens, moss borders, woodland-style beds, hanging baskets and planters. It can help create a natural, moisture-retaining layer underneath or around higher quality moss, giving your project a more established woodland feel.
This is far from our premium moss range. If you need lush, healthy, display-ready moss for terrariums, photography, moss bowls or decorative indoor use, please choose one of our premium fresh moss options instead.
You will receive approximately 10kg of moss mulch in a loose green garden sack.

Not Recommended For
This product is not recommended for premium terrariums, vivariums, indoor moss bowls, photography displays or projects where you need clean, perfect, green moss straight out of the bag. It is a natural outdoor-grade product and may contain small insects, soil, leaf litter and other woodland material.
How to Use Moss Mulch
Open the bag and loosen the moss gently by hand.
Remove any large pieces of bark, grass, twigs or debris if needed.
Soak the moss mulch in clean rainwater or dechlorinated water for 10 to 30 minutes if it feels dry.
Gently squeeze out excess water. It should be damp, not dripping wet.
For garden moss projects, lay it directly onto firm, moist soil or use it as a base layer before adding premium moss on top.
For hanging baskets, press it into the basket frame as a natural liner, then add compost and plants.
Keep it moist while it settles in, especially during dry or windy weather.
- What is Moss Mulch?
- Moss Mulch is a lower grade mix of live carpet moss and natural forest substrate. It is designed for practical outdoor use as a base layer, garden mulch, hanging basket liner or substrate material rather than as perfect display moss.
- Is this the same as your premium carpet moss?
- No. This is our component grade moss and forest substrate mix. It may include dry patches, discolouration, soil, bark, grass, twigs, leaf litter and other natural debris. If you need clean, green, display-ready moss, please choose our premium fresh moss instead.
- Can I use Moss Mulch under premium moss?
- Yes, this is one of the best uses for it. It can create a natural, moisture-retaining base layer underneath premium moss in shaded gardens, moss borders, planters and woodland-style displays.
- Can I use it in hanging baskets?
- Yes, Moss Mulch can be used as a rustic hanging basket liner or filler. Press it into the basket, add compost and plants, then keep it well watered. Hanging baskets dry out quickly, so check moisture levels often.
- Can I use this in terrariums or vivariums?
- We do not recommend this product for premium terrariums or vivariums unless you are happy to sort, clean and prepare it carefully. It is an outdoor-grade natural product and may contain soil, bark, insects and other woodland material.
- How should I prepare Moss Mulch before use?
- Open the bag, loosen the moss gently, remove any large debris if needed, then soak it in rainwater or dechlorinated water for 10 to 30 minutes if it feels dry. Gently squeeze out excess water before placing it in your project.
- Will the moss look green straight away?
- Not always. This is lower grade moss, so it may arrive with brown, dry or patchy areas. With moisture, shade and time, some moss can recover, but this product is best used where perfect appearance is not essential.
- How much will one bag cover?
- Coverage depends on how thickly you use it and how much sorting you do. Each bag weighs approximately 10kg and is best suited for projects where the moss is used as a loose substrate, mulch or base layer rather than a neat display sheet.
Care and Use Guide
☀️ Light
☀️☀️▫️ Medium to low light
Moss Mulch is best used in shaded, semi-shaded or dappled light areas. Avoid hot, direct afternoon sun, especially while the moss is settling in. Woodland-style spots, north-facing borders, damp corners and sheltered garden areas are ideal.
💧 Water
💧💧💧 High moisture
Keep the moss mulch consistently damp while it establishes. Rainwater is best, but dechlorinated tap water can also be used. It should feel moist like a woodland floor, not waterlogged or swampy. During dry weather, mist or water regularly.
🌡️ Temperature
🌡️🌡️▫️ Outdoor hardy
This moss mulch is suitable for outdoor garden use in the UK. It can cope with cool conditions, but it may dry, brown or pause growth during hot, dry spells. This does not always mean it is dead. Moss can often recover when moisture returns.
💦 Humidity
💦💦💦 High humidity preferred
Moss loves naturally humid, sheltered spaces. It performs best in areas protected from drying winds, strong sun and hot walls. If using in baskets or planters, check moisture levels often because containers dry out faster than garden soil.
🪴 Substrate and Placement
For best results, place Moss Mulch onto firm, moist soil, a woodland-style bed, planter compost or another moisture-retaining surface. It can be used underneath premium moss to create a more natural base layer.
Avoid placing it on dry bark, loose gravel, dusty soil or very sandy ground unless you improve the moisture level first.
🧺 Using in Hanging Baskets
Moss Mulch can be used as a rustic hanging basket liner or filler. Press it around the inside of the basket, then add compost and plants. Keep the basket well watered, especially in warm or windy weather, as hanging baskets dry quickly.
🐾 Pets and Wildlife
This is a natural outdoor product, not a pet food or pet bedding product. It is best kept away from pets that like to dig, chew or eat soil and plants. As with any natural garden material, wash your hands after handling.
✨ Extra Tips
For the best finish, use Moss Mulch as the hidden or semi-hidden base layer, then place healthier premium moss on top.
If some areas look brown or dry, soak them and give them time. Lower grade moss often needs patience to recover.
Do not use strong fertilisers or chemical weed killers near moss.
Keep the area moist, shaded and free from heavy foot traffic while the moss settles.

Just what I needed and enough to cover 6 wreaths. Went for the budget friendly as it won’t be seen under the decorations
Brilliant value. This is the second bag I’ve bought, really good at raising the humidity around plants.
Hugh bag of moss, love it
