Sphagnum moss plays a helpful role in creating an effective drainage layer in terrariums. It’s often placed above coarse materials like gravel or LECA to act as a barrier that prevents soil from seeping into the drainage layer, keeping the layers visually clean and functionally separate.
Because sphagnum moss is highly absorbent, it also helps regulate moisture by holding excess water and releasing it slowly as needed. This added layer of protection can reduce root rot and improve the overall health of your plants.
