Fly agaric (red and white cap mushroom) has a long history in religious ceremonies because of its hallucinogenic effects which were also used in the story of Alice in Wonderland. This is one of the most famous mushrooms featured in many fairy tales and folklore.
During Victorian and Edwardian times fly agaric was used on Christmas cards as a symbol of good luck. Apparently red and white colours of this mushroom were the inspiration for Santa Claus’s suit!
