How to look after Stephania
The plant goes into dormancy once a year around winter time, when leaves start turning yellow you can decrease watering. When the plant won’t have any leaves left move it into a darker and colder spot.
After the dormancy ”wakes up” the plant: soaks the caudex in lukewarm water for 24-48h, then move into the soil.
Light
Caudex like this plant can get sunburnt, so please keep it somewhere sunny but never in direct full sunlight.
Water
It is easy to overwater this plant, so let the soil almost completely dry out before watering. In Winter the plant will enter dormancy so resist watering it more than once a month!
Humidity
Give the plant an occasional mist and try to keep humidity over 60%.
The plant is toxic to pets.
- How should I care for my plant during its dormancy period?
- During winter, when the plant enters dormancy and leaves turn yellow, reduce watering to once a month and move it to a cooler, darker spot until it is leafless.
- What are the best lighting conditions to avoid sunburn but encourage growth?
- Place the plant in a bright location but shield it from direct sunlight to prevent sunburn. A spot with filtered light or partial shade is ideal.
- Is this plant suitable for beginners and how toxic is it to pets?
- This plant is relatively easy to care for, making it suitable for beginners. However, be cautious as it is toxic to pets; keep it out of reach of animals.
☀️ Light
☀️☀️▫️ (Medium)
The Stephania Erecta thrives in bright, indirect sunlight. Position it where it can soak up plenty of light but avoid harsh direct rays that could cause sunburn to the delicate caudex.
💧 Water
💧▫️▫️ (Low)
Less is more when it comes to watering your Stephania Erecta. Allow the soil to almost completely dry out between waterings. During its dormant winter period, reduce watering to just once a month.
🌡️ Temperature
🌡️🌡️▫️ (Average)
This plant prefers typical indoor temperatures but be sure to keep it away from draughty areas and extreme heat sources. A stable environment will help it thrive.
💦 Humidity
💦💦▫️ (Moderate)
Stephania Erecta enjoys a bit of humidity. Regular misting will keep it happy, especially during the drier winter months. Aim to maintain indoor humidity levels above 60% for optimal growth.
🪴 Repotting
Repot your Stephania Erecta every couple of years or when it outgrows its current pot. Use a well-draining soil mix to prevent waterlogging, which can lead to root rot.
🐾 Pet Friendliness
This plant is toxic to pets. Keep it out of reach of curious cats and dogs to avoid any accidental nibbling.
✅🪴 Recommended Locations at Home
Place your Stephania Erecta in living rooms, home offices, or any space with good ambient light. It’s a stunning accent piece on shelves or in room corners where its unique form can be appreciated.
🌬️🪴 Air Purifying
While not specifically known for air-purifying abilities, like most plants, it contributes to improving indoor air quality by adding oxygen and humidity.
✨ Other Plant Features
