Fittonia is ideal for closed terrariums because it loves humidity, stays compact, and has beautifully patterned leaves. We pair it with feather moss for a soft woodland look inspired by the lush moss style featured at RHS Chelsea 2025. You can build this terrarium by hand, or use the included plastic spade to create clean layers. For extra precision placing moss and decorations, you can add long terrarium tweezers.
Make it bioactive
You can add 1oz of springtails to create a bioactive ecosystem inside your terrarium. Springtails are tiny clean up crew insects that help break down natural waste and can reduce the chance of mould. For best results, simply mix the springtails into the soil layer while building, then continue the rest of the steps as normal.

Kuwa Root for Terrariums (Natural Wood Hardscape)
Create a natural look in your world of terrariums with Kuwa Root, a beautiful piece of natural wood hardscape that adds instant structure, height, and character. Kuwa root is ideal for terrariums, vivariums, moss displays, and planted bowls. Use it to anchor your layout, support epiphytes, guide climbing plants, or create a focal point for moss and miniature plants.
Every Kuwa root is totally unique, with its own shape, twists, and texture. Your piece will be selected randomly based on the size you choose, so no two setups will look the same. If it is too large for your project, it can be cut down to suit your container and the look you want.
Our standards at Highland Moss are very high. Occasionally, when working with recycled eco glass, we receive containers with slightly more visible character than usual. This can include larger air bubbles, gentle ripples, or other visual imperfections created during the glass-making process. We do not accept returns based on glass imperfections.
These containers are fully functional and safe to use. Once planted and styled, the terrarium looks just as beautiful. However, they do not quite meet the visual perfection we expect for our regular kits. Rather than letting them go to waste, we decided to turn them into a more affordable and eco-conscious option.
This budget-friendly DIY terrarium kit is perfect for anyone who values sustainability, creativity, and unique handmade pieces. It is also ideal if you love the look of eco glass and are happy to embrace its natural imperfections.

Activated charcoal (charcoal heated to increase its adsorptive power) is a great house plant soil amendment that can help improve your plants health.
Mix the charcoal with soil or add a layer on the bottom to improve drainage, absorb odours, and toxins and prevent moulds as well as balance/lower pH.
It is an excellent absorbent which can absorb fertilizer and release slowly for a longer period providing a healthy dose on a regular basis.
