    Perlite

    From: £3.50

Perlite is a naturally occurring mineral, a mined volcanic rock. Perlite pearls are fluffy, lightweight, and extremely porous, with an amazing ability to retain water. Additionally, perlite improves aeration, helps loosen the soil, provides excellent drainage, and prevents soil compaction.

It is ideal as a component of soil for Aroids, Calathea, Carnivorous plants, Succulents, and cacti. Perlite can be used in potting mixes for indoor and outdoor plants, creating a loose growing medium. It has a neutral pH of 7-7.5 is suitable for propagating cuttings and can be used in seeding trays. Remember to spray with water before handling or wear a mask to protect your airways while mixing perlite.

  • Vermiculite

    Vermiculite

    From: £4.00

Vermiculite is a great option for plants that require a lot of water and thrive in moist soil.

This lightweight material can retain a large amount of water because of its hydrophilic properties. When watered, the small golden pieces of vermiculite expand and hold moisture, gradually releasing it back into the soil even days after watering.

It is particularly beneficial for plants such as ferns, calathea, maranta, peace lilies, and alocasia that need regular watering.

Vermiculite is also suitable for use as a plant propagation medium and an effective medium for seeding trays. It helps maintain the moisture and nutrients necessary for young roots, which can easily die off in a dry growing medium.

Using vermiculite can increase the success rate of growing plants from cuttings and seeds compared to using plain soil. It can be used alone or mixed with soil and other components. With a neutral pH of 7-7.5, vermiculite can be used for a wide variety of indoor and outdoor plants.
