Marimo Moss isn’t really a moss, it is a phenomenon of algae in a ball shape from the inside out! This naturally grows in freshwater lakes in Scotland, Estonia, Iceland, Japan and Australia.
They can be found growing at the bottom of lakes and rivers in Japan and Northern Europe. This rolling moss was even featured in The BBC One Green Planet: Water Worlds featuring Sir David Attenborough.

Materials you need to create a terrarium:
Get the base layers of your terrarium right and you are off to a good start. This begins with drainage, then we add some live Sphagnum moss on top, followed by our terrarium soil mix and finally add some springtails who will be your maintenance crew. Sorted!

Introducing Highland Moss Potting Mix Blends – the perfect potting soil for all your plants! Created with care and tested successfully, these blends offer excellent conditions for your plants to promote healthy grow of roots and foliage.
Our handmade potting mixes are crafted with organically rich soil and natural worm castings. Occasionally, you may notice small white or clear worms; these are harmless to your plants and are most likely nematodes or Enchytraeidae. They commonly reside in soil and contribute to the decomposition of decaying organic matter, without causing any harm to living plants. These organisms are indicative of the excellent quality of our organic worm castings, and you might sometimes see them in the bag. There is no cause for alarm, as they are a natural component and will only benefit your beautiful plants.
This is why we have created our own range of special soil mixes. Each one is blended to give your plant the perfect drainage and nutrients as suited to its needs.
