What Is a Marimo Moss Ball?

Despite its name, the Marimo moss ball isn’t actually moss—it’s a fascinating filamentous green algae (Aegagropila linnaei) that forms naturally into a spherical shape in freshwater lakes. Found in Scotland, Estonia, Iceland, Japan, and Australia, Marimo moss balls have been featured in BBC’s Green Planet: Water Worlds, narrated by Sir David Attenborough.

These living algae balls are easy to care for, grow slowly (about 5mm per year), and can live for over 100 years with the right conditions! They are also safe for aquariums, making them a wonderful addition to fish tanks, shrimp setups, and water-based terrariums.

How to Care for Marimo Moss Balls

• Keep submerged in clean, cool water (distilled, rainwater, or dechlorinated tap water)
• Change the water every 1-2 weeks
• Keep in indirect light—avoid direct sun, which can damage them
• Gently roll the Marimo in your hands occasionally to help maintain its shape
