Description

What is a moss ball?

Despite being known as Marimo moss balls, these quirky plants are a species of filamentous green algae. The scientific name of this algae is Aegagropila linnaei and lives in freshwater where it can occur attached or unattached. It is widely known for its unattached spherical growth form, also referred to as “Marimo,” “lake balls,” or “Cladophora balls”. Sometimes also called Japanese water plant or aquatic algae balls.

There is a history of wonder and lore with Marimo Moss balls. The legend goes that two lovers who were forbidden together fell into a lake and their hearts turned into Marimo Moss! So now Marimo is said to bring your heart’s desire to both the giver and recipient of one.

What is included in the moss ball kit that I am ordering?

Our marimo moss ball kits are thoughtfully put together to ensure that all the elements reach you in perfect condition, providing you with the enjoyable experience of assembling your own marimo moss ball jar. The kit includes an eco-friendly glass bottle with a cork stopper (H12cm), beautifully detailed care instructions that also offer a step-by-step guide for constructing the jar, and an engaging narrative about the history and lore of marimo moss balls. The marimo moss (1-3cm) ball itself will be sent in a zip bag to stay moist during transit, and the kit also contains a selection of coloured sand or stones and a few natural shells for an added touch of decoration. Driftwood is not included but is available from our shop.

How to use algae marimo moss?

Marimo moss balls offer an unconventional and attractive plant decoration option for your workspace, shelving, or as a distinctive gift choice. Many customers favor them for their one-of-a-kind aesthetic and low-maintenance nature. Beyond this, marimo moss balls are also suitable for aquarium settings, cohabiting peacefully with shrimp, aiding in algae control in water propagation setups, and even as an addition to outdoor ponds.

Do Marimo moss balls grow?

The marimo algae ball also lives for an extremely long time, possibly over 100 years and grows approximately 5mm each year in good conditions. And they are super easy to care for.

Are Marimo moss balls are always perfect?

The Marimo moss balls are living, natural, balls of algae. None of them are perfectly shape in round balls and some of them may have dark green/brownish spots discolouration which is totally natural and doesn’t impact on the algae health. All the Marimo moss balls which we sell and send are checked by us and must pass the quality control.

Is it possible to store a marimo moss ball outside of the water?

A marimo moss ball is typically submerged in water continuously, however, under specific conditions, it can remain out of water for a prolonged duration without damage. If necessary, marimo balls can be placed in a sealed plastic bag for up to a week.

Is it possible to purchase marimo moss balls as a present for someone?

Absolutely, marimo moss balls make a wonderfully unique gift for those who have an affinity for less common plant-related items. Marimo moss is exceptionally low-maintenance, thrives in low-light conditions, and is nearly indestructible, making it an ideal gift even for individuals who may not have much experience with plants or the time to dedicate to their care. With their minimal upkeep and compact size, marimo moss balls are perfectly suited for a work desk, a dark bookshelf, or a bedside table, adding a touch of nature to any space. Additionally, our orders are dispatched without including invoices, allowing you to gift marimo moss balls for birthdays, Christmas, housewarmings, or weddings without the concern of the recipient seeing the price. Should you choose to, you can also add a personal note to your order at checkout.

How should I store marimo moss balls if I’m buying them to give as a gift later?

If you’re planning to hold onto the marimo moss balls for just 2-5 days before gifting, they’ll be perfectly fine in a sealed zip bag. For storage lasting longer than that, it’s advisable to snip off the top of the zip bag, above the seal (ensuring you can close it again later). Then, take the marimo moss balls out and place them in a glass container filled with cold tap water. Proceed to care for the marimo moss balls according to the care guide provided in the kit, ensuring they are kept away from heat and direct strong sunlight. When it’s time to gift them, you can then transfer them back into the zip bag. This allows the recipient to enjoy setting up their own marimo moss ball jar.

Is it appropriate to give marimo moss ball kits as gifts to colleagues or employees at work or school?

Indeed, marimo moss ball kits serve as an excellent gift for various work or school occasions. They are an ideal choice for a welcome or farewell present, even for those without extensive experience in caring for plants. Furthermore, marimo moss balls are an attractive option for corporate gifts, offering a meaningful gesture to your team or employees. They present a remarkable alternative to traditional gift hampers, wine, or cut flowers, not just because they last significantly longer (potentially up to 100 years!) but also because they are a unique, sustainable, and eco-friendly option. Colour or stones or sand as well as additional decorations can be tailored to match your organisation’s colours or theme! The jar and the marimo's are bigger than I expected, which is a lovely surprise. I got this as a gift for my other half and he's very pleased with them. They're so cute, and I love that is comes as a little kit rather than pre-assembled

Q & A

Does the jar lid light up? Thanks Victoria Packman asked on December 7, 2024

Hi, thank you for your question. No, these lids do not light up. You could swap the lid out with something with a light if you choose, but if you do I would advise you ensure the water level is a little lower for safety.

Thank you, Craig

When you change the water, what do you do with the sand? Anonymous asked on December 26, 2023

Hi,

Thank you for your question. You can keep the sand and reuse it. To change the water, you can lightly tip the jar with your fingers held over the top to stop anything other than water falling out. You can also remove the ball then rinse through the jar until the old water has overflowed out.

Any decorations like sand, gravel, shells etc are fine to reuse, just clean as required.

Hope this helps!

How long can they live out of water if buying as a gift for Christmas? Thank you Jeanette asked on November 3, 2023

Hi Jeanette,

We would recommend keeping them in a jar or container with cold tap water, it doesn't have to be anything fancy a takeaway tub or jam jar is fine. Then before gifting them they could be put back in the resealable packaging up to a week in advance.

I hope this helps,

Craig
