Bring a little magic into your home with this super tiny Marimo moss ball jar, just 4cm tall with a natural cork lid. Each jar includes a hand-selected Marimo moss ball nestled among a mix of sparkling crystals and gemstones. Simply add cold water at home and enjoy your very own miniature aquatic world.

Every Marimo moss ball is unique in size and shape, meaning no two jars are ever exactly the same. Each kit also comes with a beautifully illustrated care guide so you can look after your new green companion with ease.

What is a Marimo Moss Ball?

Despite the name, a Marimo moss ball isn’t moss at all—it’s a rare, spherical form of green algae called Aegagropila linnaei. Found naturally in cold freshwater lakes in Japan, Iceland, Scotland, and beyond, Marimo grow into soft, velvety balls that gently roll along the lakebed.

In Japanese culture, Marimo are treasured as symbols of love and luck. According to legend, two lovers’ hearts transformed into Marimo so they could stay together forever.

Can Marimo Moss Balls live without water?

They are aquatic and should always be submerged.
They can survive up to 7 days outside water if kept in a sealed bag with moisture.
For longer storage, place in a jar with cold water until ready to gift or display.

Why is my Marimo floating?
Freshly moved moss balls may trap air—simply squeeze it gently underwater to release bubbles and it will sink again.

What if it turns brown or dark green?
Some darker patches are natural. Yellowing can mean it’s too warm or getting too much direct sunlight. Move to a cooler spot, refresh the water, and keep away from radiators or sunny windowsills.

Can they live in aquariums?
Yes! They peacefully cohabit with fish and shrimp, help reduce algae, and add a natural touch to aquascapes.

How often should I change the water?
Every 2–3 weeks with cold tap water, rainwater, or fresh natural water.

Do they need fertiliser?
No—Marimo thrive in clean, cold water without fertiliser.
