Little Shaggy Moss (Rhytidiadelphus Loreus) – Naturally Sourced Carpet Moss

(1 customer review)

Experience the wild beauty of Scottish forests with our Little Shaggy Moss. Handpicked from permitted areas, this robust and spreading moss brings a piece of the  tranqul woodland right to your garden or indoor moss projects. Celebrated for its thick shoots and vibrant green ‘leaves’, it’s as stunning in appearance as it is versatile in use.

Features:

  • Distinctive Botanical Profile: Featuring irregularly pinnate, long shoots (15–20 cm), with a pleated surface and a red stem that contrasts beautifully against the greenery.
  • Unique Leaf Structure: Leaves are about 3 mm long, with a broad oval base narrowing to a tapering tip, curved and uniformly pointing in one direction, enhancing the moss’s lush texture.
  • Adaptable for Indoor and Outdoor Settings: Ideal for terrariums, green walls, moss lawns, or as part of a serene Japanese garden.
  • Fertility and Growth: It’s not uncommon to find fertile stems, with a 2 mm long, curved capsule borne on a striking red seta about 3 cm long.
  • Natural Habitat: Thrives in acidic, wooded upland areas and grasslands, indicative of its hardiness and low maintenance needs.

Care Instructions:

  • Indoors, place in cool, shaded areas, misting every few days.
  • Outdoors, plant in acidic, moisture-retentive soil, in shaded or semi-shaded areas to mimic its natural, wooded habitat.

We have supplied this moss with great success for many show gardens, including The Beardy Gardener for BBC Gardeners World Live (Gold Medal), Caley Bros at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2023 (Gold Medal) and this year for The National Autistic Society Garden at RHS Chelsea (fingers crossed for another gold medal)!

You may receive one or more pieces depending on the size of the individual sheets.

Please note that as we have the sheet moss in its natural state, there will be variances in the colour and shape of the moss. We may pick a very similar species in some circumstances.

To keep our moss at the highest quality, we only keep a limited stock of a few square metres of each type at a time. We can quickly gather moss for any larger orders, but please allow for up to 10 days for us to pick, pack and ship your moss if you require a large amount.

Why We Love It:
Little Shaggy Moss is little by name, but not by nature. This moss goes large! It carpets our forests and it makes for a lovely place to rest on a day of intense moss picking. It is ideal for outdoor use due to its long stems and our ability to pick it in larger pieces.

How It Fits Into Your Life:
Whether creating a soft outdoor moss carpet or as part of an indoor project, this moss adapts to your creative needs. Let it transform your environment into a lush, green sanctuary that speaks of the forests from which it came.

Care Instructions:

  • Indoors, place in cool, shaded areas, misting every few days.
  • Outdoors, plant in acidic, moisture-retentive soil, in shaded or semi-shaded areas to mimic its natural, wooded habitat.
