Hoya Wayetii Tricolour, commonly known as the Wax Plant, is a unique and colorful variety that showcases long, slender leaves with variegated shades of green, cream, and pink. The pink tones are particularly vibrant on new growth, adding a fresh pop of color that gradually softens as the leaves mature. This rare variegation makes Hoya Wayetii Tricolour a stunning and sought-after addition to any plant collection.

Perfect for hanging baskets, Hoya Wayetii Tricolour’s trailing vines create an elegant, cascading effect, bringing natural beauty to any space. Occasionally, this Hoya produces clusters of small, fragrant, star-shaped flowers, adding an extra layer of charm. Known for its air-purifying properties, this plant helps improve indoor air quality by filtering out toxins, making it both a visually appealing and functional choice.

Hoya Wayetii Tricolour is also pet-friendly, making it a safe addition to homes with cats and dogs. Its hardy and low-maintenance nature means it can handle periods without water and thrives with minimal care, making it an ideal choice for beginners and busy plant enthusiasts alike.

Please note, the images shown represent the actual stock. Minor cosmetic imperfections on the leaves are natural for live plants and do not affect the plant’s health or growth potential.

The genus Hoya includes over 500 recognised species (the number varies greatly due to discrepancies within the group and new species being discovered). Most Hoya plants are originally from Asia, Australasia, and the Pacific islands. Botanist Robert Brown named the Hoya genus after his friend Thomas Hoy.

Hoya species are found in rainforest, coastal and cliff habitats, where they may grow climbing on other plants (this pattern is also known as epiphytic), forming vines and, occasionally, shrubs.

Hoya Wax Plant Care Guide

Light: Hoya thrives in bright, indirect light but can tolerate a few hours of direct sunlight daily. In lower light, the plant may grow slower and produce fewer flowers but will remain healthy.

Water: This drought-tolerant plant can handle long periods without water, making it perfect for those who occasionally forget to water. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings, and avoid overwatering, which can cause root rot.

Humidity: Moderate to high humidity (50-60%) is ideal for Hoya Pubera, although it can tolerate average indoor humidity. Placing the plant near a humidifier or in a bathroom will promote lush growth and more frequent blooming.

Temperature: Hoya Pubera thrives in warm temperatures between 18-26°C. To prevent stress, keep it away from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.

Soil: Hoya can be grown in Highland Moss succulent mixgeneral houseplant mix, or an aroid potting mix, all of which are available on our website. These blends provide excellent drainage and aeration, helping to keep your plant’s roots healthy.

Fertiliser: Feed the plant with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). No feeding is needed during autumn and winter when growth slows.

Repotting: Hoya prefers to be slightly root-bound and doesn’t require frequent repotting. Repot every 2-3 years or when it outgrows its pot.

Pruning: Prune lightly to remove any dead or damaged leaves and to control the plant’s size. Avoid cutting flower stems, as Hoyas can bloom from the same stalk multiple times.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

1. Yellowing Leaves:

  • Cause: Overwatering.
  • Solution: Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings and ensure proper drainage.

2. Leaf Drop:

  • Cause: Sudden changes in temperature or lighting.
  • Solution: Keep the plant in a stable environment with consistent light and temperature.

3. Lack of Blooms:

  • Cause: Insufficient light.
  • Solution: Move the plant to a brighter spot with more indirect light to encourage flowering.

4. Brown Leaf Tips:

  • Cause: Low humidity.
  • Solution: Increase humidity with regular misting or by placing a humidifier nearby.

5. Pests (Mealybugs, Spider Mites):

  • Cause: Dry conditions or pest exposure.
  • Solution: Treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap, and regularly inspect the plant for pests.

Hoya is a fast-growing, pet-friendly, air-purifying plant that’s perfect for those who prefer low-maintenance plants. With its ability to thrive on occasional neglect and its stunning appearance, this resilient plant is a must-have for any plant lover.

How often should I water the Hoya Wayetii Tricolour?
Water this plant once the soil has completely dried out, typically every 1-2 weeks depending on environmental conditions. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so ensure the pot has good drainage.
Can the Hoya Wayetii Tricolour thrive in a bathroom environment?
Yes, bathrooms typically have higher humidity which this Hoya can benefit from, promoting more lush growth and potentially more frequent blooming. Just make sure it receives sufficient indirect light.
Is the Hoya Wayetii Tricolour suitable for beginners?
Absolutely! Its low-maintenance nature and tolerance for occasional neglect make it perfect for beginners or those with a busy lifestyle.

☀️ Light

☀️☀️▫️ (Medium)

The Hoya Wayetii Tricolour Wax Plant thrives in bright, indirect light but can also tolerate a few hours of direct sunlight each day. Position it in a spot where it receives plenty of light to enhance its vibrant leaf colours and promote blooming.

💧 Water

💧▫️▫️ (Low)

This plant is quite drought-tolerant, needing only occasional watering. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so it’s better to err on the side of too dry rather than too wet.

🌡️ Temperature

🌡️🌡️▫️ (Average)

Hoya Wayetii Tricolour prefers warm environments typical of indoor settings, thriving best between 18-26°C. Keep it away from drafts and drastic temperature changes to avoid stress.

💦 Humidity

💦💦▫️ (Moderate)

A moderate level of humidity will help this plant flourish, although it’s quite adaptable to less humid environments commonly found indoors. For optimal growth and health, consider placing it near a humidifier or in a naturally humid room like a kitchen or bathroom.

🪴 Repotting

Hoya Wayetii Tricolour does well when slightly root-bound, so repotting is only necessary every 2-3 years or if it significantly outgrows its current pot. Use a well-draining potting mix to ensure healthy root development.

🐾 Pet Friendliness

This plant is non-toxic and safe for homes with pets. You can enjoy the beauty and benefits of your Hoya without worrying about the safety of your cats and dogs.

🏠 Recommended Locations at Home
