Pilea spruceana ‘Norfolk’ Friendship Plant
Pilea spruceana ‘Norfolk’ is a compact little stunner with quilted leaves that look almost metallic, a mix of silvery tones with deep green and burgundy veining. It is often sold as the Norfolk Friendship Plant, and once you see the foliage up close, it is easy to understand why it is such a favourite.
This variety stays nicely manageable on a shelf, desk, or plant stand, and it is also a brilliant choice for terrariums and vivariums thanks to its love of humidity and its neat growth habit.
It is known as a “friendship plant” for a reason too. It is easy to propagate from cuttings, so once it fills out you can chop and prop to create new plants to share or to make your pot look extra bushy.
Quick care guide
☀️ Light: Bright, indirect light for best colour (handles a bit lower light, but can go leggy)
💧 Water: Keep lightly moist, water when the top layer starts to dry, do not let it sit soggy
💦 Humidity: Enjoys higher humidity, ideal for terrariums, kitchens, or near a humidifier
🌱 Top tip: Pinch back growing tips to encourage a fuller, bushier plant
Pet note: It is widely sold as non-toxic to cats and dogs, but it is still best to keep plants out of reach of pets that like to chew.

☀️ Light
☀️☀️▫️ (Medium)
The Pilea Suprecena Norfolk thrives in bright, indirect light. It’s best to place it near a window that receives plenty of natural light but is shielded from the harsh midday sun. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, so a little shade will do it good.
💧 Water
💧💧▫️ (Medium)
Water your Pilea when the top inch of the soil feels dry to the touch. Be sure to water it thoroughly, allowing excess water to drain away. This plant dislikes having its roots in standing water, so ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.
🌡️ Temperature
🌡️🌡️▫️ (Average)
Pilea Suprecena Norfolk enjoys a typical indoor temperature range, ideally between 18°C to 24°C. It can tolerate a slight drop at night but try to keep it away from draughty areas and sudden temperature changes.
💦 Humidity
💦💦▫️ (Moderate)
This plant enjoys a bit of humidity but doesn’t require the levels that more tropical plants might. A normal home environment usually suffices, but if your home is particularly dry, consider placing it in a more humid room like the kitchen or bathroom.
🪴 Repotting
Pilea Suprecena Norfolk should be repotted every couple of years or when it outgrows its pot. Use a well-draining houseplant soil mix to give it fresh nutrients and encourage growth. Spring is the best time for repotting as the plant is entering its active growing phase.
🐾 Pet Friendliness
This plant is non-toxic and safe for pets. You can keep it within reach of cats and dogs without worrying about their health if they happen to nibble on it.
✅🪴 Recommended Locations at Home
Ideal spots for the Pilea include living rooms with sheer curtains, well-lit bathrooms, and kitchens. Just remember to keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources like radiators.
🌬️🪴 Air Purifying
The Pilea Suprecena Norfolk is known for its air-purifying qualities. It helps remove pollutants from indoor air, making it not just a beautiful, but also a functional addition to your home or office.
✨ Other Plant Features
