Philodendron Rio Houseplant
Philodendron Rio is a beautiful variegated trailing plant with glossy, heart shaped leaves patterned in soft greens with creamy stripes. It is ideal for shelves, hanging pots, or training up a small moss pole. It suits beginners and experienced growers, and with bright indirect light it keeps strong variegation and grows steadily.
Common names you can include (these are used loosely in the trade, not official):
-
Variegated heartleaf philodendron
-
Variegated trailing philodendron
-
Sweetheart plant (often used for heartleaf types, but can be confusing because it is also used for other plants)
This plant is:
✔️ Air-Purifying
✔️ Easy to Care For
✔️ Loved by Collectors
✔️ Fast Growing
✔️ Great for Gifts
✔️ Ideal for Aroid Enthusiasts
Quick Care Guide
☀️ Light: Bright indirect light (more light usually means stronger variegation)
💧 Water: Let the top 30 to 50% of the soil dry out, then water thoroughly
💦 Humidity: Medium to high is ideal, but adapts well
🌱 Extra tip: A chunky aroid mix helps avoid soggy roots. If repotting, our Highland Moss premium potting mix is a great option.
Difference to Philodendron Brasil
They are similar because both are variegated forms of heartleaf philodendron (Philodendron hederaceum), but the look is different:
-
Variegation pattern: Brasil usually has a bold lime or yellow green stripe through the centre with darker green edges. Rio tends to have a cleaner, more striped look with cream to silvery tones and multiple bands of lighter colour.
-
Overall vibe: Brasil looks brighter and more neon. Rio looks softer, more creamy and refined.
-
Light needs for colour: Both need bright indirect light to keep the variegation, but Rio can look more dramatically different leaf to leaf depending on light levels and growth conditions.
-
Growth habit: Both trail and climb in the same way, and both benefit from a moss pole for larger leaves.
Shipping and aftercare note
Your plant will arrive in the grower potting mix. Let it settle in for 1 to 2 weeks before repotting, propagating, or making big changes. Each plant is unique, so leaf count and variegation will vary. All plants from Highland Moss come with a scannable QR code for care guides, and we use reused and recyclable packaging where possible.
