Oxalis Depii Lucky Clover Plant: The False Shamrock Plant

Oxalis triangularis, commonly known as the false shamrock, is a perennial plant from the Oxalidaceae family. This easy-to-care-for houseplant is known for its striking deep burgundy leaves and delicate small flowers.

Light and Watering Requirements

The leaves of the false shamrock open during the day and close at night. After experiencing travel stress, the plant may take a few hours to start responding to light again. To help it thrive, place the plant in a bright location and water it when the top layer of soil feels dry.

Dormancy Care

Oxalis triangularis enters a dormant phase once a year, typically during winter. During this time, the leaves will stop growing and may not open. Allow all the leaves to die back and then remove any dead foliage. During dormancy, keep the plant in a cooler, darker location and water it lightly every few weeks. After approximately three months, move the plant back to a bright, warm spot to encourage new growth.

Pet Safety

Please note that the Oxalis triangularis is toxic to pets. Keep it out of reach of cats, dogs, and other animals to ensure their safety.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

  1. Wilting or Drooping Leaves: This could indicate overwatering or underwatering. Check the soil moisture and adjust your watering schedule. Water when the top of the soil is dry, but ensure the plant is not sitting in waterlogged soil.
  2. Yellowing Leaves: Yellow leaves can be a sign of too much direct sunlight or overwatering. Move the plant to a location with bright, indirect light and check your watering routine.
  3. Leaves Not Opening During the Day: This is often due to insufficient light. Make sure the plant is placed in a bright location where it can receive plenty of indirect sunlight.
  4. No New Growth During the Growing Season: If your Oxalis triangularis isn’t producing new leaves, it may still be in its dormant phase. Ensure you are following the dormancy care instructions and wait for it to naturally come out of dormancy.
  5. Brown Leaf Tips: Brown tips are commonly caused by low humidity or inconsistent watering. Increase humidity around the plant, perhaps by misting it regularly, and maintain a consistent watering schedule.
  6. Pests: Look out for common pests such as aphids or spider mites. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil and keep the plant clean and healthy.
How should I care for my plant during its dormancy period?
During the winter dormancy, remove dead foliage, keep it in a cooler, darker location and water lightly every few weeks. After about three months, move it back to a warm, bright spot to stimulate new growth.
Is the Oxalis Depii suitable for homes with pets?
Please be aware that this plant is toxic to pets. It is best kept out of reach from cats, dogs, and other household animals to ensure their safety.
What should I do if the leaves of my plant are not opening during the day?
This usually indicates insufficient light. Position it in a spot where it can receive plenty of bright, indirect sunlight to help the leaves open as expected.

☀️ Light

☀️☀️▫️ (Medium)

The Oxalis Depii thrives in bright, indirect light. It enjoys soaking up the sun during the day but prefers to avoid the harsh direct sunlight. A spot near a window with a sheer curtain is ideal for this delightful plant.

💧 Water

💧💧▫️ (Medium)

Water your Lucky Clover when the top layer of soil feels dry to the touch. Be sure to drain any excess water to prevent root rot. This plant likes to stay moist but not soggy.

🌡️ Temperature

🌡️🌡️▫️ (Average)

Oxalis Depii prefers typical indoor temperatures between 18°C and 24°C. It can tolerate a bit cooler or warmer, but sudden temperature changes can stress the plant.

💦 Humidity

💦💦▫️ (Moderate)

This plant enjoys moderate humidity. Regular misting or a pebble tray can help increase humidity levels, especially during dry winter months.

🪴 Repotting

Repot your Lucky Clover every 2-3 years or when you notice it becoming root-bound. Use a well-draining potting mix to ensure healthy growth. Spring is the best time for repotting, just before the growth season begins.

🐾 Pet Friendliness

Please note that the Oxalis Depii is toxic to pets. To ensure the safety of your furry friends, place this plant out of their reach.

🏠 Recommended locations at home

This plant is perfect for adding a touch of nature to your study desk, coffee table, or anywhere that receives good indirect light. Its unique leaf movements make it a great conversation starter in living spaces.

🌿 Air Purifying

While not primarily known for air-purifying properties, the Oxalis Depii adds a refreshing green touch and can contribute to a healthier indoor environment by increasing humidity.

✨ Other Plant Features

The Oxalis Depii, with its butterfly-like leaf movements and striking colour contrast, is a mesmerizing addition to any plant collection. Its ability to adapt to various living conditions makes it suited for both beginners and experienced plant lovers.
