Fresh Premium Sphagnum Moss In Pink
From: £6.00
We handpick our gorgeous Sphagnum moss from our exclusive sites in the North of Scotland. In these locations there are forestry operations, so we carefully pick our moss before these areas are disturbed by the machinery.
We also spread our picking around our sites so as not to overpick any specific area.
We have Sphagnum moss in either our ‘classic’ green/brown or natural stunning pink varieties.
- Make your own moss pole, we recommend about 250g per 30cm of pole you want to make.
- Use in your substrate mixes – for example, mix it with sand to make the perfect carnivorous plant soil.
- Use as a layer in your terrarium as a natural alternative to mesh above the drainage layer.
- Ideal for propagation – especially ‘string’ plants like string of hearts, string of pearls etc
You can see an example of it in the photos and in our YouTube moss pole installation guide here
Please note that as this is natural moss there will be some variances in colour.
The moss looks wonderful when paired with one of our green or pink moss poles.
Fresh moss is also super useful for propagation – see the photos for an example where the moss helped my variegated string of hearts cuttings produce roots. We also have a video on IGTV here

Q & A
Is it possible to make a little peat bog in a container like a half oak cask? How would you go about it? Which moss would you use?
Hi Juli,
I would recommend following similar steps to my carnivorous bowl instructions to try this. It wouldn't be a peat bog, but you could keep sphagnum this way. However, if you are growing on wood, I would recommend a different species, such as Feather Moss instead.
Thank you,
Craig

How do you make a sphagnum moss bog garden for insectivorous plants? How wet should they be kept? Can you recommend a book to learn how to keep insectivorous plants. Thanks!
Hi Juli,
Thank you for your question. To make a carnivorous garden, we would recommend our carnivorous potting mix (https://highlandmoss.com/shop-2/plant-care/soil/carnivorous-plants-potting-mix-by-highland-moss/) with a layer of live sphagnum on top. Use a nice deep bowl and keep it wet at all times. We keep our carnivorous plants in the shop in a tray of water 24/7. Ideally you would use rainwater but if none is available you can use distilled water or water from a dehumidifier. I don't have a particular book focused on carnivorous plants I could recommend to be honest, I am sure any book focused on these plants will be full of lots more information.
Hope this helps!

Can you provide the rough size of the 250g option
Hi Patrick,
Thank you for your question, 250g of sphagnum moss fills about a 750ml volume. We suggest that this is a good amount per 30cm of moss pole.
I hope this helps!
Thanks,
Craig

Will this grow under the correct conditions?
Hi Hayley,
Yes! We have moss in little corked jars and other mossariums and it grows nicely.
Hope this helps!

High quality product.
Hard to find anywhere else.
