Description
Variegata Rumohra Adiantiformis (Leatherleaf Fern) Care Guide
Light:
The Variegata Rumohra Adiantiformis, commonly known as Leatherleaf Fern, does well in low to medium light conditions. It thrives in dappled or indirect light, mimicking the forest floor. Avoid direct sunlight, which can cause leaf burn. It can adapt to lower light settings, making it suitable for shaded indoor areas.
Watering:
Leatherleaf Fern prefers consistently moist soil. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, but avoid waterlogging, which can lead to root rot. During the cooler months, reduce watering slightly. Ensure the pot has good drainage to prevent standing water.
Humidity:
High humidity is essential for this fern. Regular misting or placing the plant on a pebble tray with water will help maintain moisture. You can also group it with other plants to increase ambient humidity. Dry air can cause the fronds to turn brown and crispy.
Temperature:
It prefers a temperature range of 15°C to 24°C. Keep it away from cold drafts or heating vents, as sudden temperature changes or extremes can cause stress to the plant.
Soil:
Use a rich, well-draining potting mix with organic matter such as sphagnum moss. Adding perlite or sand helps improve drainage while keeping the soil loose and airy. You can use also terrarium growing medium.
Fertilising:
Feed your Leatherleaf Fern every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring to early autumn) with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser diluted to half strength. In the winter months, you can reduce feeding as the plant’s growth slows down.
Pruning:
Trim away dead or yellowing fronds regularly to encourage new growth and keep the plant looking fresh. This fern is slow-growing but will benefit from regular pruning.
Repotting:
Repot every 2-3 years or when the plant outgrows its current pot. Use fresh, well-draining soil, and choose a pot that’s one size larger than the current one.
Common Issues and Troubleshooting
- Yellowing Leaves:
Cause: Overwatering or poor drainage.
Solution: Check if the soil is waterlogged. Allow the top layer to dry out between waterings and ensure the pot has proper drainage. - Browning Fronds:
Cause: Low humidity or underwatering.
Solution: Increase humidity by misting the plant or using a humidifier. Ensure that the soil stays consistently moist but not soggy. - Stunted Growth:
Cause: Low light or nutrient deficiency.
Solution: Although the Leatherleaf Fern tolerates low light, it will thrive best with medium indirect light. Ensure you’re fertilising regularly during the growing season. - Leggy or Sparse Growth:
Cause: Insufficient light.
Solution: Move the plant to a brighter area with indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, but make sure it gets enough ambient light for fuller growth. - Wilting or Drooping:
Cause: Underwatering or heat stress.
Solution: Check the soil and water immediately if it feels dry. If placed near a heat source or in direct sunlight, move the plant to a cooler, shadier spot. - Pests (Scale, Mealybugs, or Spider Mites):
Cause: Dry, indoor conditions and lack of air circulation.
Solution: Increase humidity, mist the plant regularly, and inspect it for pests. Treat infestations with neem oil or insecticidal soap. - Root Rot:
Cause: Overwatering or poor drainage.
Solution: If root rot is present, remove affected roots, repot the plant in fresh soil, and adjust your watering schedule to prevent future issues.
