Fresh Live Feather Moss – Green and Versatile
From: £4.00
We pick our feather moss in small batches from our local private working forests. At these locations the moss can be destroyed due to the forestry operations, so we find a new life for it. This is a beautiful moss with feather-shaped strands that will grow beautifully in your terrarium or vivarium.
Your feather moss may be one or more of a few different species which all commonly grow together or in similar conditions:
- Glittering Wood Moss (Hylocomium splendens)
- Common Tamarisk Moss (Thuidium tamariscinum)
- Common Hook Moss (Cratoneium commutatum)
This moss is also often known as fern moss, silky forklet moss, glittering wood moss or stairstep moss.
To keep your moss happy it will enjoy lots of humidity but it isn’t too fussed about a lot of light. It will fare well in light, but shouldn’t be exposed to prolonged periods of direct sunlight.
This vibrant moss features bright, yellowish-green to dark green shoots that form soft, loose mats, making it a striking addition to any natural setting, terrarium or as a soil topper. The moss is known for its distinctive, fern-like appearance, with delicate, feathery branches that create a lush, carpet-like texture.
Key Features:
- Color: Ranges from bright yellow-green to dark green.
- Size: Grows 5–25 cm long, forming beautiful, loose mats.
- Structure: The moss is tripinnately branched, giving it a fern-like, layered look.
- Leaves: Small, heart-shaped or triangular leaves cover the stems, adding to its textured appearance.
- Growth: Prefers neutral conditions and thrives in woodland soil, hedge banks, and damp grassy areas.
Ideal for adding a touch of natural greenery to your terrariums, garden beds, or woodland-themed landscapes, this feather moss is a versatile and low-maintenance choice. While it rarely produces capsules, when it does, they appear in autumn and winter, adding an extra layer of seasonal interest.
Bring a piece of the forest to your space with this unique, easy-to-care-for moss.
- How should I care for my feather moss to ensure it thrives?
- Feather moss thrives in humid conditions but doesn’t require much light. Keep it in a location where it can receive indirect light and maintain a consistently damp environment, but be careful not to overwater it.
- Can I use this moss in a terrarium with other plants?
- Yes, feather moss is an excellent addition to terrariums and pairs well with other humidity-loving plants. Its low light requirement and ability to form dense mats make it ideal for creating a lush, green base in terrarium setups.
- Is the harvesting of feather moss sustainable?
- Our feather moss is sustainably harvested from private working forests where it might otherwise be destroyed due to forestry operations. This practice not only gives the moss a new life but also contributes to forest sustainability by minimising waste.
