I would like to introduce Michelle, the sensitive plant or Biophytum Sensitivum. She is also known as the little living tree. She is an extraordinary plant which reacts to touch.
Her leaves fold inward when touched or with a little shake and open after a few minutes. Botanists believe that this is a defence method to avoid being eaten by animals, when something is close to the plant, she folds her leaves and looks much smaller and so is less attractive to a potential plant eater. Gently touching her does not harm Michelle but she uses energy to close and open leaves, make sure that she will get some rest after the playtime 😉
As Michelle loves humidity she is well suited to a terrarium too.
As you know, Michelle is a shy plant, after receiving her give her a day or two to acclimate in her new home. During this time she may not react to touch after traveling. I can imagine we all would be in a little shock after being sent in a box 😉
How to look after Michelle
She likes bright light with some direct sunlight in the morning. Afternoon sunlight is too strong and may burn her leaves. She likes high humidity so don’t forget to spray her a few times a week. She likes when soil is a little bit moist but not soggy. Fertilize every two weeks with liquid fertiliser according to instructions on the box.
Michelle is not toxic!
