Rhipsalis Paradoxa Minor also known as Chain cactus is another variety of popular and easy-to-care Rhipsalis plants which will bring jungle vibes to your home or office.

Rhipsalis is a highly interesting genus of plants that is surprisingly part of the cactus family and is the only cactus in the family that grows outside of North and South America. There are approximately 35 to 60 species that make up this genus of epiphytic (grows on trees) and lithophytic (grows on rocks) plants that can be found in the rainforest of Central and South America, remote jungles of Africa and Asia, and a few islands throughout the Indian Ocean. This genus has been one of the most successful members of the family and has spread itself further than any cacti has gone before!

While in the same family as cacti this plant is very different. Often the way to take care of these plants is not the same as how you would expect to look after a regular dessert cactus. While most species of cacti are known to be covered in needles and prefer to live in dry and arid environments, Rhipsalis is quite the opposite and would struggle to survive in the same conditions due to its lack of needles and ability to tolerate the glaring sun. These differences have put Rhipsalis into its own category of cactus often referred to as the jungle cacti.

This stunning plant is more of a trailing wonder, in its natural habitat, it produces narrow thread-like stems that wrap and twist around trees stretching out up to 30 feet long, producing gorgeous displays of red, yellow, orange or white flowers that eventually turn into berries. While not impossible for it to flower as a houseplant it is highly unlikely to be able to recreate its natural conditions well enough to encourage it to flower but nonetheless still makes for a stunning trailing houseplant.

How should I care for my Rhipsalis Paradoxa Minor in a typical home environment?
Place your Rhipsalis in a spot with bright, indirect light and maintain a consistent watering schedule, allowing the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. Avoid direct sunlight and excessively dry air to mimic its natural humid, jungle habitat.
Is the Rhipsalis Paradoxa Minor suitable for beginners?
Yes, this plant is well-suited for beginners as it requires minimal care compared to other cacti. Its resilience and low light requirements make it an excellent choice for those new to indoor gardening.
Can the Rhipsalis Paradoxa Minor be grown in a terrarium setting?
Yes, the Rhipsalis can thrive in a terrarium due to its need for humid conditions. Ensure the terrarium is well-ventilated and the plant is not placed in direct sunlight to avoid overheating.

☀️ Light

☀️☀️▫️ (Medium)

The Rhipsalis Paradoxa Minor thrives in medium light conditions. It prefers bright, indirect sunlight, as direct sunlight can cause the delicate stems to burn. A spot near a window with a sheer curtain would be ideal to filter the light.

💧 Water

💧💧▫️ (Medium)

This plant likes consistent moisture but is not too demanding. Water it when the top inch of the soil feels dry. Be careful not to overwater, as it does not like to sit in soggy soil. During winter, reduce watering but do not let it dry out completely.

🌡️ Temperature

🌡️🌡️▫️ (Average)

Rhipsalis Paradoxa Minor enjoys average room temperatures between 18-24°C. It can tolerate a slight dip in temperature during the night but keep it away from draughty areas and sudden temperature changes.

💦 Humidity

💦💦💦 (High)

Being a jungle cactus, it loves high humidity. Regular misting, a humidity tray, or placing it in naturally humid rooms like kitchens or bathrooms can help meet its humidity needs.

🪴 Repotting

Repot your Rhipsalis every 2-3 years or when it has outgrown its pot. Use a well-draining potting mix, ideally formulated for cacti and succulents, to prevent root rot and provide adequate drainage.

🐾 Pet Friendliness

This plant is pet-friendly! No need to worry about your furry friends around this non-toxic plant.

🏠 Recommended locations at home

Place your Rhipsalis in a spot with bright, indirect light like near east or west-facing windows. Bathrooms or kitchens can be great if they have enough light, due to their higher humidity levels.

🌿 Air Purifying

While not specifically known for air-purifying abilities, like many houseplants, the Rhipsalis can contribute to improving indoor air quality by increasing humidity and producing oxygen.

✨ Other Plant Features

The chain-like, cascading stems of the Rhipsalis Paradoxa Minor make it a stunning choice for hanging baskets or high shelves where its trails can drape beautifully. Although it rarely flowers indoors, its lush greenery adds a touch of the tropics to any space.
