Another variety of popular and easy-to-care Rhipsalis plants which will bring jungle vibes to your home or office.
Rhipsalis is a highly interesting genus of plants that is surprisingly part of the cactus family and is the only cactus in the family that grows outside of North and South America. There are approximately 35 to 60 species that make up this genus of epiphytic (grows on trees) and lithophytic (grows on rocks) plants that can be found in the rainforest of Central and South America, remote jungles of Africa and Asia, and a few islands throughout the Indian Ocean. This genus has been one of the most successful members of the family and has spread itself further than any cacti has gone before!
While in the same family as cacti this plant is very different. Often the way to take care of these plants is not the same as how you would expect to look after a regular dessert cactus. While most species of cacti are known to be covered in needles and prefer to live in dry and arid environments, Rhipsalis is quite the opposite and would struggle to survive in the same conditions due to its lack of needles and ability to tolerate the glaring sun. These differences have put Rhipsalis into its own category of cactus often referred to as the jungle cacti.
This stunning plant is more of a trailing wonder, in its natural habitat, it produces narrow thread-like stems that wrap and twist around trees stretching out up to 30 feet long, producing gorgeous displays of red, yellow, orange or white flowers that eventually turn into berries. While not impossible for it to flower as a houseplant it is highly unlikely to be able to recreate its natural conditions well enough to encourage it to flower but nonetheless still makes for a stunning trailing houseplant.
- How should I position my Rhipsalis Crispata Forest Cactus in my home for optimal growth?
- Place your Rhipsalis in a location with medium to full light, avoiding direct sunlight to mimic its natural, shady rainforest habitat. A spot near a north or east-facing window is ideal.
- Is the Rhipsalis Crispata suitable for beginners, and what are the key care tips?
- Yes, this plant is perfect for beginners due to its easy-care nature. Ensure to water it when the top of the soil feels dry but avoid overwatering. It thrives in well-draining soil and appreciates high humidity.
- Can the Rhipsalis Crispata be grown in terrariums or with other plants?
- Due to its need for airflow and less humid conditions compared to typical terrarium plants, it’s best grown in hanging baskets or pots. It can be placed alongside other pet-friendly and easy-care plants like spider plants or pothos.
☀️ Light
☀️☀️▫️ (Medium)
The Rhipsalis Crispata Forest Cactus thrives in medium light conditions. It enjoys bright, indirect sunlight. Avoid placing it in direct sunlight as it can cause the stems to scorch, which is unlike its cousins in the desert who bask under the sun!
💧 Water
💧💧▫️ (Medium)
Water your Rhipsalis when the top inch of the soil feels dry. Ensure the pot provides good drainage to avoid soggy soil, which might lead to root rot. This plant likes consistency with watering, but be mindful not to overwater.
🌡️ Temperature
🌡️🌡️▫️ (Average)
Rhipsalis prefers average room temperatures from 18°C to 24°C. It can tolerate a little fluctuation, but keep it away from draughty windows and doors during the chilly seasons.
💦 Humidity
💦💦▫️ (Moderate)
This jungle cactus enjoys moderate humidity, which can usually be achieved in a typical home environment. If you notice the air is too dry, especially during winter when heating systems are on, a small humidifier or a pebble tray with water can help increase humidity.
🪴 Repotting
Rhipsalis Crispata prefers to be snug in its pot but consider repotting every 2-3 years to refresh the soil. Use a well-draining potting mix, ideally formulated for cacti and succulents, to provide the best growth conditions.
🐾 Pet Friendliness
This plant is non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a fantastic choice for pet owners. Let it trail freely without worrying about your furry friends!
✅🪴 Recommended Locations at Home
Perfect spots for your Rhipsalis include shelves that receive filtered light, near east or north-facing windows, or any high-humidity areas like kitchens or bathrooms with natural light.
🌬️🪴 Air Purifying
Rhipsalis helps purify the air, making it not just a visually appealing addition to your space but also a functional one, improving your indoor air quality.
✨ Other Plant Features
Beyond its lush, trailing greenery, Rhipsalis can occasionally surprise you with small, inconspicuous flowers, adding subtle charm to its already attractive appearance.
