Description

Philodendron Micans Velvet Heart Care Guide

Light

  • Ideal Conditions: Philodendron Micans thrives in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate lower light levels, though this may cause the leaves to become darker and the plant to grow slower.
  • Avoid: Direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate, velvety leaves.

Watering

  • Watering Frequency: Water when the soil dries out. Ensure that the soil is evenly moist but not waterlogged, as the plant dislikes soggy conditions.
  • Winter Care: Reduce watering during colder months, allowing the soil to dry out more between waterings.

Humidity

  • Preferred Level: Philodendron Micans enjoys high humidity. Misting regularly or placing the plant near a humidifier will help it thrive, particularly in drier environments.
  • Adaptability: It can tolerate average household humidity but may show more vibrant growth in higher humidity environments, making it perfect for terrariums or moss bowls.

Temperature

  • Ideal Range: 18โ€“24ยฐC. Keep it in a warm environment, away from cold drafts or sudden temperature changes.
  • Avoid: Temperatures below 12ยฐC, which can stress the plant and cause slow growth or leaf damage.

Soil

  • Best Soil Type: Use a high-quality aroid potting mix that offers good drainage while retaining some moisture. A mix containing peat, perlite, and orchid bark works well.

Fertilising

  • Feeding Schedule: Feed monthly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser. Reduce feeding in autumn and winter when growth slows.

Pruning

  • How To Prune: Trim any leggy or unruly growth to maintain a compact, healthy plant. Regular pruning also encourages bushier growth.
  • Encouraging Bushier Growth: Pinch off growing tips to encourage branching and a fuller appearance.

Philodendron Micans Troubleshooting

Yellowing Leaves

  • Cause: Overwatering or poor drainage is the most common cause of yellowing leaves. Ensure the soil dries out between waterings, and the pot has proper drainage.
  • Solution: Adjust watering habits and make sure the plant isnโ€™t sitting in waterlogged soil.

Brown Leaf Tips

  • Cause: Low humidity or inconsistent watering can cause brown tips on the leaves.
  • Solution: Increase humidity by misting regularly or using a humidity tray. Ensure the plant is watered consistently, but avoid overwatering.

Leggy Growth

  • Cause: Insufficient light can cause the plant to grow leggy as it stretches towards the light.
  • Solution: Move the plant to a brighter spot with indirect light to promote compact growth.

Slow Growth or Faded Leaves

  • Cause: Lack of nutrients or insufficient light can lead to slow growth or dull, faded leaves.
  • Solution: Increase feeding during the growing season and ensure the plant is receiving enough indirect sunlight.

Pests

  • Common Pests: Spider mites, mealybugs, and aphids may infest the Philodendron Micans.
  • Solution: Wipe the leaves with a damp cloth and treat any infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil.

Root Rot

  • Cause: Overwatering or poor drainage can lead to root rot.
  • Solution: If you suspect root rot, remove the plant from its pot, trim off any affected roots, and repot it in fresh, well-draining soil.
