Care Guide for Pachypodium lamerei (Madagascar Palm, Club Foot, Devil’s Backbone):
Troubleshooting Tips:
With its bold, architectural form and easy care, the Pachypodium lamerei—whether known as the Madagascar Palm, Club Foot, or Devil’s Backbone—is an excellent choice for those looking to add a striking, low-maintenance plant to their collection. Perfect for indoor settings, this plant will thrive with the right care, bringing a unique and exotic flair to any space.
☀️☀️☀️ (High)
The Pachypodium lamerei loves basking in bright, direct sunlight. Ideally, place it near a south or west-facing window to ensure it receives plenty of rays. If kept outdoors, a spot that enjoys full sun for the majority of the day is perfect. Insufficient light can hinder its growth, so make sure it’s got the best seat in the house for sunshine!
💧💧▫️ (Medium)
As a succulent, your Madagascar Palm appreciates a good drink but only when its soil is completely dry. Check the top 2-3 inches of soil and water thoroughly if dry. Cut back on watering in the autumn and winter to about once a month, allowing the soil to dry out between sessions.
🌡️🌡️🌡️ (Warm)
This plant thrives in warm conditions, ideally between 18-30°C. It’s not a fan of the cold and needs protection from drafts and temperatures below 10°C. During frosty weather, keep it cosy indoors.
💦▫️▫️ (Low)
The Pachypodium lamerei is not keen on high humidity. It prefers its surroundings to be on the drier side, which helps prevent issues like rot. Ensure good air circulation around your plant to keep it happy.
Use a well-draining cactus or succulent mix for your Madagascar Palm, enhancing drainage with sand or perlite to prevent root rot. Repotting is generally needed every few years or when the plant outgrows its pot.
Caution advised! The spines on this plant can be quite sharp, making it not the best option for homes with curious pets or young children.
This plant makes a striking addition to bright spots such as sunrooms, south-facing windowsills, or any well-lit part of your patio or conservatory. Its bold look can enhance living rooms or offices with ample light.
While not specifically known for air-purifying abilities, its lush leaves do contribute to a fresher indoor environment.
The Pachypodium lamerei, with its unique architectural form and easy-care nature, is not only a conversation starter but also a delightful addition for anyone looking to enhance their space with a touch of the exotic and spectacular.
