Marimo Moss Ball Cladophora isn’t really a moss, it is a phenomenon of algae that grows in a ball shape from the inside out! This naturally grows in freshwater lakes in Scotland, Estonia, Iceland, Japan and Australia. Often called a water pet due to fluffy, velvety texture.

You will receive only marimo moss ball without a glass jar with a cork lid, stones & shells for the base and care gudies. To reduce waste all balls will be pack in one, reusable zip bag.

The story of Marimo Moss

There is a history of wonder and lore with Marimo Moss balls. The legend goes that two lovers who were forbidden together fell into a lake and their hearts turned into Marimo Moss! So now Marimo is said to bring your heart’s desire to both the giver and recipient of one.

Despite being known as Marimo Moss Ball Cladophora, these quirky plants are a species of filamentous green algae. The scientific name of this algae is Aegagropila linnaei and lives in freshwater where it can occur attached or unattached. It is widely known for its unattached spherical growth form, also referred to as “Marimo,” “lake balls,” or “Cladophora balls”.

They can be found growing at the bottom of lakes and rivers in Japan and Northern Europe. This rolling moss was even featured in The Green Planet: Water Worlds featuring Sir David Attenborough.

How should I care for my Marimo Moss Ball?: Marimo Moss Balls require minimal care, thriving in cold water with low to medium light exposure. Change the water every two weeks and gently roll the ball in your hands to maintain its shape.
Can Marimo Moss Balls be kept in a terrarium with other plants?: Marimo Moss Balls are aquatic and need to be submerged in water, making them unsuitable for traditional terrariums. However, they can be placed in an aquatic terrarium with other water-friendly plants.
What is the environmental impact of disposing of Marimo Moss Balls?: If you need to dispose of your Marimo, do not flush it down the toilet as it can cause environmental issues. Instead, place it in a sealed bag and discard it with your regular waste to prevent any ecological imbalance.
