Kokedama, meaning moss ball in Japanese, is a beautiful form of botanical art where a plant’s roots are wrapped in a nutrient-rich soil mix, then encased in moss. Displayed hanging or on a tray, kokedama are a striking and minimalist way to showcase your plants – perfect for home, office, or gifting.
Unlike other kits, we use the highest quality, sustainably sourced moss, hand-harvested in Scotland. Our moss has featured in RHS Chelsea Flower Show and major UK garden displays. Each kit is handcrafted at Highland Moss and includes our own kokedama soil mix, carefully balanced to nourish your plant and hold moisture without becoming waterlogged.

**Q: How often should I water my kokedama once it’s assembled?**
A: Water your kokedama by soaking the moss ball in water until it feels saturated and heavy, then allow it to drip dry. This should be done approximately once a week, or more frequently if the moss ball feels light and dry.
**Q: Can I use the kokedama kit with any type of houseplant?**
A: The kit is versatile and suitable for a wide range of small to medium-sized houseplants. For optimal results, choose plants that thrive in high humidity and indirect light, such as ferns, spider plants, or philodendrons. Ensure to select the correct kit size based on your plant’s root system.
**Q: What makes the moss used in your kokedama kits sustainable?**
A: Our moss is sustainably sourced and hand-harvested in Scotland, ensuring minimal impact on natural habitats. By using local, renewable resources and adhering to ethical collection practices, we maintain ecological balance and support local biodiversity.
☀️☀️▫️ (Medium)
Our Kokedama thrive in bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the moss and the plant leaves. A spot near a window with a sheer curtain is ideal.
💧💧▫️ (Medium)
Water your Kokedama by soaking the moss ball in water until fully saturated and then let it drain. This usually needs to be done once a week, but you might adjust frequency based on the dryness of the moss and the environment.
🌡️🌡️▫️ (Average)
Kokedama prefer average home temperatures of 18°C to 24°C. Avoid placing them near drafts, radiators, or air conditioning units.
💦💦💦 (High)
Moss balls love humidity! If your home is dry, especially during winter, consider using a humidity tray or a small room humidifier to keep them happy.
Kokedama doesn’t require traditional repotting. Instead, refresh the moss and check the root health annually. If the roots have outgrown the moss ball, you can either trim them slightly or prepare a new, larger moss ball using the same plant.
All our curated Kokedama options include pet-friendly plants, ensuring they are safe for your furry friends. However, always prevent pets from chewing on plants as a precaution.
Kokedama makes a striking display in living rooms, kitchens, or offices. They can be placed on a desk, shelf, or hung in a window. Just ensure they receive the right amount of light and are away from extreme temperatures.
Many of the plants available for our Kokedama kits, like spider plants and philodendrons, are known for their air-purifying properties. They help remove common household toxins from the air, making them not just beautiful but also beneficial for indoor environments.
Kokedama is not only an artistic expression but also a practice in mindfulness and care. Engaging with your Kokedama can be a peaceful, meditative activity, helping you unwind and connect with nature.
