Hoya Pubera, commonly known as the Wax Plant, is a delightful and unique plant with fuzzy green leaves and clusters of fragrant, star-shaped flowers. The creamy white blooms have a velvety texture, making them a striking feature in any indoor plant collection. This trailing plant is ideal for hanging baskets, where its vines can cascade elegantly, adding natural beauty to your space.

In addition to its aesthetic appeal, Hoya Pubera is pet-friendly, ensuring safety for homes with cats and dogs. It’s also known for its air-purifying qualities, improving indoor air by filtering out harmful toxins. One of its best features is its resilience—it can handle long periods without water, making it a perfect choice for those who sometimes forget to water their plants. In fact, Hoya Pubera thrives on a bit of neglect, which makes it ideal for beginners or anyone with a busy lifestyle.

Please note, the images shown represent the actual stock. Minor cosmetic imperfections on the leaves are normal due to the nature of live plants and do not affect the overall health of the plant.

There are over 500 recognised species included in the genus Hoya (the number varies greatly due to discrepancy within the group and new species being discovered).  Most Hoya plants are originary from Asia, Australasia and the Pacific islands. The Hoya genus was named by botanist Robert Brown, after his also botanist friend, Thomas Hoy.

Hoya species are found in rainforest, coastal and cliff habitats, where they may grow climbing on other plants (this pattern is also known as epiphytic), forming vines, and occasionally, shrubs.

Hoya Pubera Wax Plant Care Guide

Light: Hoya Pubera thrives in bright, indirect light but can tolerate a few hours of direct sunlight daily. In lower light, the plant may grow slower and produce fewer flowers but will remain healthy.

Water: This plant is drought-tolerant and can handle long periods without water, making it perfect for those who occasionally forget to water. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings, and avoid overwatering, which can cause root rot.

Humidity: Moderate to high humidity (50-60%) is ideal for Hoya Pubera, although it can tolerate average indoor humidity. Misting or placing the plant near a humidifier will promote lush growth and more frequent blooming.

Temperature: Hoya Pubera thrives in warm temperatures between 18-26°C. Keep it away from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes to prevent stress.

Soil: Hoya Pubera can be grown in Highland Moss succulent mix, general houseplant mix, or an aroid potting mix, all available on our website. These blends provide excellent drainage and aeration, helping to keep your plant’s roots healthy.

Fertiliser: Feed the plant every 4-6 weeks with a balanced liquid fertiliser during the growing season (spring and summer). No feeding is needed during autumn and winter when growth slows.

Repotting: Hoya Pubera prefers to be slightly root-bound and doesn’t require frequent repotting. Repot every 2-3 years or when it outgrows its pot.

Pruning: Prune lightly to remove any dead or damaged leaves and to control the plant’s size. Avoid cutting flower stems, as Hoyas can bloom from the same stalk multiple times.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

1. Yellowing Leaves:

  • Cause: Overwatering.
  • Solution: Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings and ensure proper drainage.

2. Leaf Drop:

  • Cause: Sudden changes in temperature or lighting.
  • Solution: Keep the plant in a stable environment with consistent light and temperature.

3. Lack of Blooms:

  • Cause: Insufficient light.
  • Solution: Move the plant to a brighter spot with more indirect light to encourage flowering.

4. Brown Leaf Tips:

  • Cause: Low humidity.
  • Solution: Increase humidity with regular misting or by placing a humidifier nearby.

5. Pests (Mealybugs, Spider Mites):

  • Cause: Dry conditions or pest exposure.
  • Solution: Treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap, and regularly inspect the plant for pests.

Hoya Pubera is a fast-growing, pet-friendly, air-purifying plant that’s perfect for those who prefer low-maintenance plants. With its ability to thrive on occasional neglect and its stunning appearance, this resilient plant is a must-have for any plant lover.

How often should I water my Hoya Pubera?
Water the plant when the top few centimetres of soil feel dry, typically every 1-2 weeks. Avoid overwatering by ensuring the pot has adequate drainage.
Can I place my Hoya Pubera in a bathroom?
Yes, bathrooms with bright, indirect light are ideal due to their higher humidity, which can promote lush growth and flowering. Just ensure it also receives some direct light if possible.
Is the Hoya Pubera suitable for beginners?
Definitely! This plant is particularly forgiving and requires minimal care, thriving on neglect. Its resilience to infrequent watering makes it ideal for novice plant owners.
