Maranta Leuconeura Kerchoveana is also known as a prayer plant or rabbit foot plant!
Maranta’s were given their name after the famous Italian 16th-century Botanist Bartolomeo Maranta. But they have received the common name “Prayer Plant” after an interesting adaptation they have formed to save energy during the night. Once the light level has dropped and it has become dark the flat leaves of the Maranta fold upwards almost perfectly in half giving it the appearance of praying hands.

Maranta Leuconeura Kerchoveana (Prayer Plant) Care Guide
The Maranta Leuconeura Kerchoveana, commonly known as the Prayer Plant, is a beautiful and unique houseplant native to the tropical regions of Brazil. Its distinct green leaves with darker patches and the characteristic folding of its leaves in the evening, resembling hands in prayer, make it a popular choice for indoor gardeners. With proper care, it can thrive and display vibrant foliage year-round.
☀️☀️▫️ (Medium)
The Maranta Leuconeura Kerchoveana thrives in bright, indirect light. While it can adapt to lower light conditions, maintaining medium light will keep its leaf markings vibrant and distinct. Avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf scorch.
💧💧▫️ (Medium)
This Prayer Plant prefers its soil to be consistently moist. Water it when the top inch of the soil feels dry. Ensure proper drainage to prevent waterlogging, which can lead to root rot. In winter, reduce watering slightly as the plant’s growth slows.
🌡️🌡️▫️ (Average)
Ideal temperatures for your Prayer Plant range between 18-24°C (65-75°F). It’s sensitive to cold draughts and should be kept away from cold windows or doors during the chilly months.
💦💦💦 (High)
Maranta Leuconeura Kerchoveana loves high humidity, reminiscent of its tropical origins. Use a humidifier, mist the plant regularly, or place it on a humidity tray to meet its needs, especially in dry conditions.
Use a well-draining houseplant mix with added perlite or peat to improve drainage and aeration. Repotting is typically needed every 1-2 years or when the plant outgrows its pot. This helps refresh the soil and provide space for growth.
This Prayer Plant is non-toxic and safe for pets. A perfect choice for households with curious cats and dogs!
Ideal spots include well-lit bathrooms or kitchens where humidity tends to be higher. Avoid direct sunlight areas like south-facing windowsills.
The Maranta Leuconeura Kerchoveana is known for its air-purifying qualities, making it a healthy addition to your living space by filtering out airborne toxins.
Besides its stunning visual appeal and air-purifying abilities, the Prayer Plant’s daily leaf movements add a dynamic touch to any room, making it not just a plant but a conversation starter.
