£20.00
Characteristics
Cactus Gymnocalycium Mihanovichii variegate is an unusual cactus called also Moon Cactus or Phoenix – a name it deserves due to its extraordinary, neon almost colours. This native to dry and hot regions of Argentinan desserts lacks green chlorophyll, creating the variegation in lush orange, pink and yellow colours. This colourful, easy-to-care cactus is a must-have for any succulent lover.
Pictures represent our actual stock, plants will be selected randomly. The level of variegation may vary.

Description
Gymnocalycium Mihanovichii Variegata (Phoenix Cactus) Care Guide
Light:
This cactus thrives in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some direct sunlight but should be protected from intense midday sun, which can cause the colours to fade or scorch. Ideally, place it in a spot with filtered light or morning sun.
Watering:
As a succulent, the Phoenix Cactus prefers its soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water thoroughly, then allow the potting mix to dry before watering again. During the winter months, reduce watering as the cactus goes dormant and needs less moisture.
Humidity:
This cactus does well in normal indoor humidity and doesn’t require any special humidity levels. Avoid placing it in areas with excessive moisture, such as bathrooms, as too much humidity can lead to rot.
Temperature:
Gymnocalycium Mihanovichii Variegata prefers warm temperatures and should be kept in a range of 18°C to 26°C. It can tolerate short periods of cooler temperatures but should be kept away from cold drafts or freezing conditions, which can damage the plant.
Soil:
Use a well-draining cactus or succulent mix, or amend regular potting soil with sand or perlite to improve drainage. Proper drainage is essential to prevent root rot.
Fertilising:
Feed the Phoenix Cactus once a month during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, diluted cactus fertiliser. Avoid fertilising in the winter when the plant is dormant.
Repotting:
Repot every 2-3 years or when the plant outgrows its current pot. Use a slightly larger container with fresh, well-draining soil.
Common Issues and Troubleshooting
- Fading Colours:
Cause: Too much direct sunlight or nutrient deficiency.
Solution: Move the cactus to a spot with bright, indirect light. Ensure regular feeding during the growing season with a cactus-specific fertiliser. - Soft, Mushy Stem:
Cause: Overwatering or root rot.
Solution: Allow the soil to dry out completely before watering again. If root rot is present, remove the cactus from its pot, trim the affected roots, and repot it in fresh, dry cactus soil. - Wrinkled or Shrinking Cactus:
Cause: Underwatering.
Solution: Water the cactus thoroughly, allowing the excess to drain. Resume regular watering once the soil dries out between waterings. - Yellowing Base:
Cause: Grafting issues or overwatering.
Solution: Check for root rot or waterlogged soil. Adjust your watering schedule to prevent standing water at the base. - Pest Infestations (Mealybugs, Spider Mites):
Cause: Dry conditions or overcrowded plants.
Solution: Treat affected areas with neem oil, rubbing alcohol or insecticidal soap and increase air circulation around the plant. Regularly inspect for pests, especially in dry conditions. - Root Rot:
Cause: Poor drainage or overwatering.
Solution: Ensure the pot has drainage holes and use a well-draining cactus mix. If rot is severe, cut off the damaged parts and repot in fresh soil.
