Care Guide for Calathea Ctenanthe Oppenheimiana (Prayer Plant)

Calathea Ctenanthe Oppenheimiana, also known as the Prayer Plant, is a tropical houseplant that requires specific care to thrive. Here’s a comprehensive care guide and troubleshooting advice for common issues:

Basic Care Requirements

1. Light

  • Ideal Light: Bright, indirect light is best. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves and cause fading.
  • Low-Light Tolerance: The plant can tolerate lower light conditions but will grow slower. In extremely low light, the plant may lose its vibrant colors.

2. Watering

  • Frequency: Water the plant regularly, keeping the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Watering should be done when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch.
  • Water Quality: Use distilled or rainwater whenever possible. Tap water can contain fluoride, chlorine, and salts that harm the plant and cause brown leaf tips.

3. Humidity

  • Ideal Humidity: This plant thrives in high humidity, ideally 60% or more.
  • Ways to Increase Humidity:
    • Place the plant on a pebble tray filled with water.
    • Use a humidifier nearby.
    • Group plants together to create a more humid microenvironment.

4. Temperature

  • Optimal Temperature: Keep temperatures between 65°F – 80°F (18°C – 27°C).
  • Avoid Drafts: Sudden temperature changes, drafts, or placing the plant near heating or cooling vents can cause stress.

5. Soil

  • Type: Use a well-draining potting mix, preferably a mixture designed for tropical plants.
  • Additives: You can mix in perlite or orchid bark to enhance drainage.

6. Fertilizing

  • When to Fertilize: Feed during the growing season (spring and summer) every 4-6 weeks.
  • Type of Fertilizer: Use a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer at half strength. Avoid fertilizing during fall and winter when the plant is in a dormant phase.

7. Pruning and Maintenance

  • Pruning: Trim any dead, yellow, or brown leaves regularly to promote new growth and maintain its appearance.
  • Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years to refresh the soil and prevent root binding.

8. Propagation

  • Method: Division during repotting is the best method to propagate Calathea. Gently separate the plant into smaller clumps, ensuring each clump has roots attached, and pot them individually.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

1. Yellowing Leaves

  • Cause: Overwatering is the most common reason for yellow leaves.
  • Solution: Check the soil’s moisture level. Reduce watering frequency and ensure the pot has proper drainage.

2. Browning Leaf Edges or Tips

  • Cause: This can be due to low humidity or the use of tap water that contains chemicals like fluoride and chlorine.
  • Solution:
    • Increase humidity around the plant using a humidifier or misting it regularly.
    • Switch to distilled or filtered water for watering.

3. Curling Leaves

  • Cause: Often, this is a sign of under-watering or low humidity.
  • Solution:
    • Check the soil moisture and water if it feels dry.
    • Increase humidity levels around the plant.

4. Leggy or Slow Growth

  • Cause: Insufficient light can lead to leggy growth or stunted growth.
  • Solution: Move the plant to a brighter location with more indirect light.

5. Faded or Dull Leaves

  • Cause: Exposure to direct sunlight can bleach the vibrant colours of the plant’s leaves.
  • Solution: Move the plant to a spot with indirect light, away from direct sun.

6. Brown Spots on Leaves

  • Cause: Brown spots can be a result of fungal or bacterial infections, usually due to overwatering or poor air circulation.
  • Solution: Allow the soil to dry between watering and ensure the plant is in a location with good air circulation. Trim off the affected leaves.

7. Pests

  • Common Pests: Spider mites, mealybugs, and aphids can attack this plant.
  • Solution:
    • Regularly check the undersides of the leaves for pests.
    • Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
    • Wipe the leaves down with a damp cloth to remove dust and pests.
How often should I water my Calathea Ctenanthe Oppenheimiana?
Water when the top inch of the soil feels dry, maintaining moist but not soggy conditions. Regular watering is essential, but always check the soil first to avoid overwatering.
Can I place this plant in a bathroom?
Yes, bathrooms typically have higher humidity which this plant loves. Ensure the bathroom has sufficient indirect light to prevent the loss of vibrant colours and maintain healthy growth.
Is the Calathea Ctenanthe Oppenheimiana suitable for beginners?
This plant is considered low-maintenance and is quite forgiving, making it a great choice for beginners. Just ensure to follow the basic care tips regarding light, water, and humidity.

☀️ Light

Scale: ☀️☀️▫️ (Medium)

This lush Prayer Plant prefers bright, indirect light to maintain its vibrant striped leaves. Too much direct sunlight can cause the leaves to scorch, so a spot near a window with a sheer curtain is ideal. It can adapt to low-light conditions, but its growth may slow and the leaves might lose some brilliance.

💧 Water

Scale: 💧💧▫️ (Medium)

Calathea Ctenanthe Oppenheimiana likes its soil to be consistently moist but never soggy. Water it when the top inch of soil feels dry. Using distilled or rainwater can prevent the tips of the leaves from browning, a common issue with tap water due to its fluoride and chlorine content.

🌡️ Temperature

Scale: 🌡️🌡️▫️ (Average)

The ideal temperature for this Prayer Plant is between 18°C – 27°C. It’s important to keep it away from drafts and sudden temperature changes, which can stress the plant. Avoid placing it near radiators or air-conditioning units.

💦 Humidity

Scale: 💦💦💦 (High)

Thriving in a high humidity environment, this plant loves moisture in the air. You can increase humidity by placing it on a pebble tray with water, using a humidifier, or grouping it with other plants.

🪴 Repotting

Repot your Calathea every 1-2 years to refresh the soil and give its roots room to grow. Choose a pot that’s slightly larger and ensure it has good drainage. Use a well-draining tropical plant mix, possibly amended with perlite or orchid bark for better drainage.

🐾 Pet Friendliness

This plant is non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs, making it a fantastic choice for pet owners who want to spruce up their home with lush, safe greenery.

🏠 Recommended locations at home

Place your Calathea in well-lit bathrooms, kitchens, or living rooms where humidity tends to be higher. Just ensure it is not in the path of direct sunlight. The visual appeal of its leaves makes it a great addition to any room that could use a touch of nature’s beauty.

🌿 Air Purifying

Known for its air-purifying abilities, the Calathea Ctenanthe Oppenheimiana helps remove impurities and toxins from the air, making it not only a decorative but also a functional addition to your indoor space.

✨ Other Plant Features

Beyond its stunning appearance and air-cleaning properties, this plant is also known for its easy-care nature, making it suitable for both novice and experienced plant enthusiasts.

Great website and very communicative with delivery updates. Minor issue with the interface for the aroid plants bundle: I was unable to select both the base and extension pole, so had to add the latter separately.

Really lovely selection of plants photographed beautifully. I had a question before placing my order and used the online contact form. Craig couldn’t have been more helpful with a super quick response which resolved my query completely. My order was delivered on time and the plants and accessories were wrapped so beautifully with thoughtful little extras which made opening everything really special. I even got a ‘wee gift’ with my order and although I was aware from the website that one would be included with my order, it was just another example of a company who really wants to connect with the customers, even though there must be a financial commitment. I found the website full of useful articles and being able to access specific care guides for my purchases has been extremely useful.

The plants are well taken care of and from the few times I’ve bought from them never had any issues with the plants. 10/10 care would definitely recommend buying either only or in person.
