This is the base layer of the terrarium, it allows excess water to sit below the substrate and prevents plant roots from rotting. Our personal preference are Leca pebbles, as they are light and porous.

Make a terrarium Highland Moss style! We use our glorious sphagnum as a substrate blocker as opposed to something like mesh. Sphagnum is full of lovely nutrients and will act as a sponge for excess water, it can drip it down into the drainage layer or it can be a sponge for the soil to draw from if needed.

The all important soil layer. We make our own terrarium soil mix in house, and we also include activated charcoal so you do not have to deal with any of that messiness.

This is also the point where we highly recommend adding Springtails. These tiny white beasties live in the soil and keep it maintained for you. Simply empty the tub into the soil when you are adding this layer. Don’t worry, they are not interested in escaping – you just put them in paradise!
