Care Guide
- Light: Anthuriums thrive in bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, as this can scorch the leaves, but they can tolerate lower light levels, though blooming may reduce in dimmer areas.
- Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Make sure the pot has good drainage to prevent root rot. Reduce watering during winter months when the plant’s growth slows.
- Humidity: Anthuriums love high humidity, as they are tropical plants. Mist the leaves regularly, or place the plant near a humidifier or on a tray of pebbles with water. This is especially important in dry indoor conditions during winter.
- Soil: Anthuriums need a well-draining, aerated potting mix. Our general houseplant mix or aroid plants mix available in our shop are ideal, as they allow for proper drainage while retaining moisture. This will keep your Flamingo Flower’s roots healthy.
- Temperature: Keep your Anthurium in a warm environment, ideally between 18-24°C. Avoid cold drafts or temperatures below 12°C, as this can damage the plant.
- Fertilising: Feed your Anthurium monthly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to half strength. Stop fertilising in autumn and winter.
Troubleshooting & Common Issues
- Yellowing Leaves: This can be a sign of overwatering or poor drainage. Make sure the soil dries out slightly between waterings and that the pot has good drainage. Avoid leaving the plant in standing water.
- Brown Leaf Tips: Often caused by low humidity or overexposure to direct sunlight. Increase humidity by misting the plant regularly, and move it to a spot with indirect light.
- No Flowers: If your Anthurium isn’t blooming, it may not be receiving enough light. Move it to a brighter spot, but avoid direct sunlight. Fertilising during the growing season can also help encourage blooms.
- Root Rot: This is a common issue with overwatering or using a poorly draining soil mix. Ensure the potting mix is well-draining, such as our general houseplant mix or aroid plants mix. If you suspect root rot, reduce watering and repot the plant in fresh soil.
