I would like to introduce Diego. He is a very extraordinary looking ‘Spanish Moss’ air plant. Tillandsia usneoides, because this is his correct name and is not actually moss and belongs to the same family as pineapple which makes him even more interesting!

If anybody would ask, Diego is not even from Spain but from Mexico, Central America, South America, Caribbean and the United States where he lives on trees in swap areas. The Spanish moss is not a parasite and does not damage or take nutrients from trees on which he lives.

Diego like most air plants needs minimum attention and would be a great option if you don’t have time or experience with plants.

Diego has been used throughout history in all kinds of crazy ways, from a health remedy to horse blankets to use in fire arrows!

How to look after Diego

Diego would love a bright spot away from direct sunlight which may dry him out. He likes warm temperatures and moisture. Spray him with water (the best will be distilled or rainwater) but avoid overwatering and spraying when the moss is still damp.

Diego is not toxic to pets but eating the plant can cause vomiting.
