Our Isopds come in a 4oz (7.5cm x 4.7cm x 4.5cm) paper pulp container with a lid. You will receive isopods, mixed species, colours and sizes. The quantity is sufficient for one medium-sized terrarium such as the one linked here.
What are Isopods?
Isopods are members of the crustacean family, which includes also crabs, shrimp and lobsters. These small, land-dwelling arthropods have segmented bodies, with multiple legs and antennae. Their exoskeletons offer protection, and they come in a variety of colours and sizes, making them visually appealing additions to any terrarium and mossarium.
The Role of Isopods in Terrariums
Isopods play a crucial role in maintaining a balanced ecosystem within a terrarium. They are detritivores, meaning they feed on decaying organic matter, such as fallen leaves, dead plants, and faecal matter. In other words, clean your terrariums and mossariums! They help in the decomposition process and release essential nutrients back into the soil.
Additionally, isopods aerate the substrate as they burrow, promoting healthier root growth for plants. Their constant activity also benefits the terrarium’s microfauna, as they become a source of food for various creatures, like small reptiles and amphibians.

This happens when the plant is less active during periods of little to no light and helps them to maintain its energy in a dense and competitive growing environment.

One of the most striking features of the Pellaea Rotundifolia is its unusual fronds composed of rounded, shiny, green, flat leaves which look like buttons.
Ferns have been around almost since the dawn of time growing in damp shaded forests across the world. From tropical forests to cooler woodlands, these living relics date back almost three hundred million years. Over this time, thousands of varieties have been formed in the wild and by modern cultivators with around ten to fifteen thousand different species in existence. Even today new Fern species are still being found in unexplored areas of the world.
Since they first reached the houseplant scene in the early 19th century, Ferns have been some of the most rewarding houseplants out there. They can be true specimens of beauty, adding their own unique touch to interior spaces with a wide range of shapes, sizes, and textures. They are graceful and elegant plants, with many soft and delicate leaf forms. Their lush fronds can bring added tranquillity to some of the gloomiest corners of our homes.
But these plants aren’t for the haphazard beginner, to really make these plants thrive and grow to their full potential they need to be nurtured and watched with an attentive eye. But at least once you’ve learnt to take care of one Fern you should have your bases covered for any different species in the future. Most Ferns are pretty similar when it comes to their care and often the same rules apply across many different species.

If you order a larger amount of springtails we may use different packaging including zip bags or larger containers.
A single container usually includes various stages of insect growth, and these creatures have a lifespan of approximately one year. Initially, only the mature, larger and white springtails are easily visible, while the smaller ones may be harder to spot.
We offer 24-hour shipping for springtails. Please open the parcel immediately upon receipt. Avoid exposing them to extreme temperatures, such as heat or cold, and direct sunlight.
Move the medium with springtails to your terrarium, you can mix it with the soil or place on the top of the potting mix/moss. Make sure the soil is moist and ready for springtails.

Please note that our moss may vary from the pieces photographed. This is because we pick our moss fresh several times a month from our locations in the North East of Scotland and what can be found may vary depending on the seasons. It is always beautiful and always picked from locations with permission from land owners. We never overpick. If you have any questions about what we currently have, please ask.
Live cushion or bun moss is very versatile. You can use it in a terrarium, your fairy garden, as a soil topper or even for crafts like a moss wall or frame. It is also perfect for making your own moss bowl! If you want to keep the moss fresh you should give it a good mist or water from time to time. This moss is great as the buns can be easily split up. For example, you may wish to have a few little spots of bun moss in different sections of your terrarium or moss bowl.
