Hidden Scotland – Issue 04

£15.00

We are delighted to introduce Hidden Scotland magazine to our shop. This is a fantastic way of learning more about the hidden gems all over Scotland. Every edition is packed with content and it doesn’t matter which issue you buy, you are sure to find something you never knew about before!

From the editors of Hidden Scotland:

Here’s a fact that may (or, indeed, may not) surprise you. Scotland plays home to an astonishing 8% of Europe’s coastline, the country’s cliffs, bays, beaches and inlets stretching for a collective total of some 19,000km. This endlessly explorable shoreline features heavily in the magazine, with visits to the fascinating islands of Easdale and Jura, a conjuring of folklore from the Isle of Skye, and a vivid look at some of our spectacular coastal wildlife, from minke whales to gannets. There’s also an account of the 1338 siege of salty-aired Dunbar Castle, and the heroic role played in its defence by Agnes Randolph.

But that’s just the start. If Scotland goes big on its coast, it also goes big on creativity. We profile illustrator Johanna Basford – whose intricately styled colouring books have sold tens of millions of copies – meet photographer Soo Burnell, and showcase the stunning wooden furniture produced by Braemar’s Tor Workshop. Elsewhere, we meet some of the inspiring creatives doing incredible work in Fife, among them organic brewers Futtle.

And the Kingdom isn’t the only region in the spotlight. We take an in-depth look at the myriad riches of Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, from its cultural highlights and characterful villages (one of which, Crovie, graces the front cover of this issue) to its family attractions and trend-setting food and drink outlets. And on the subject of a good meal, we also explore some of the country’s best restaurants with rooms. Apologies in advance if it makes you hungry.

The contents list doesn’t end there. You’ll also find a special focus on some of the nation’s most iconic pieces of architecture, and a piece examining the timeless allure of visiting Scotland’s castles, among other features. And did someone mention fennel seed and lemon pastries? (Recipe on page 136 – and be warned, they’re seriously good.)
