Description

Moss poles help your plant grow larger, faster and happier by emulating their natural environment. Our extendable moss poles are handmade with beautiful and fresh sphagnum moss, birch wood, mossing wire and twine. We make each pole to order in just 1-2 days.

We only use our own handpicked moss from our sites in the North of Scotland which we offer in a variety of natural colours. Our moss locations are on private land where there are forestry operations. We spread out our picking locations so as not to overpick any one spot, allowing regrowth. By doing this, we also have a beautiful variety in our sphagnum mosses, with beautiful vibrant colours.

Our moss poles aren’t just a way of adding humidity, encouraging growth and providing support – they are a beautiful addition in their own right to your plant collection.

Perfect for Monstera and climbing plants with aerial roots. such as Pothos and Philodendron. Moss poles don’t just provide support and stability, they give your plant a more natural environment. This stimulates growth and helps grow larger leaves.

You can get a pole or extension in three colour variations:

  • Classic green/brown
  • Pink
  • Mixed (alternating stripes of classic and pink)

Please note that this is natural moss without any dye, so there will be some variations in colours.

Please check the height of your plant to choose the best length of the pole. If you are between sizes it is better to go for the bigger size as the plant will grow.

We recommend a pole about 10-20cm taller than the height of your plant.

Allow approximately 10cm for the length of the stake going into the soil.

How to use

We have made a video guide to show you how to install your moss pole – Check it out here.

Insert next to your plant with a healthy distance from its roots. Don’t worry if some moss is immersed in the soil.

Spray the pole with water when misting your plant, it will keep moisture for longer and helps to keep required humidity.

Attaching an extension

  • Carefully spread any moss on the top of your pole to the side.
  • Line up the screw in the extendable pole with the hole in the existing pole.
  • Gently hold each pole and twist to screw them together.
  • You can gently adjust the pole if it hasn’t gone on completely straight, the wood is quite soft and will allow a small amount of adjustment.
  • Make sure the poles are screwed tightly together and you have a flush connection!

Care

We have made a handy care guide for your moss pole, view it here.

Please be aware the the moss pole is created from natural materials which are fragile and should be handled with care.

Spray with water every few days or as required to keep the moss lush and in good shape.

Moss will get darker and more colourful when wet. If you prefer this look spray with water on a regular basis.

If your moss pole dries out, you can revive it by giving it a good soak and the moss will bounce back.

Very pleased with my moss poles. However, I would say the mechanism for attaching extensions to moss poles needs to be a bit more robust/durable. These are quite heavy-weight when wet and the attachment screw is barely long enough to keep a long extended pole stable with a newly attached monstera or raphidophora!

I really didn’t get on with these poles. The first came frozen and had died, it was extremely crispy and I couldn’t revive it. The second one was alive when it arrived and looked ok, however, I have personally found keeping the poles hydrated an issue. I purchased it to go in with my Monstera Albo which has daily watering (semi hydro) has a 70% humidifier on at all times and in addition to this, I spritz the moss pole daily - but it still died. Both the poles ended up in the bin and I have since purchased a wire cage pole that has no wooden areas in the middle; I now just pop a bottle of water on the top of the pole and saturate it, it is alive and doing well. I found this pole to be extremely high maintenance and impossible to keep alive, I think the wooden pole made it impossible for me personally. Reply to Craig’s response - the 1star is due to my thoughts on the moss poles received. For me personally, I did not find them good and had to replace them with another brand and style of moss pole within days, so it was a wasted £27.95. The customer service was just in addition to my thoughts on the moss pole.

Beautiful moss pole, I hope I can keep it that way, and heavier than I thought it would be. It goes well with my pink philodendron.

Much better than a coir pole and great that it can be extended as the plant grows. Monstera already looks so much better on the pole.

The best moss pole you can buy. I have tried so many in the past and been disappointed but this is the real deal. I will be buying only from here in future. It's obvious this has been handmade with care, the moss is so fresh and healthy, the pole is very strong and easy to assemble. I bought the largest pole so was worried it would be heavy but it stands really well and my plant has shown an immediate improvement. Thankyou so much!

Amazing idea, now no more worries about detangling roots to move to a bigger moss pole. I bought this extension 2 months ago, and this is how is looking today after some misting. Moss still looking colourful and healthy :) Will definitely buy more when my plant outgrows this bit.

My favourite philodendron can get as big as it wants. Good quality, great price, really pleased. I’m definitely ordering extensions once it gets a bit taller

Best moss poles I have found. Well worth the cost when compared with coir covered plastic tubes which are not easy to use or to fix climbers.

See above. Lovely but far too heavy to be supported upright by this thin stick

    • Hi Julie,

Thank you for your feedback. We have made a whole lot of these moss poles, so please get in touch if you have any questions about them before throwing them away – we have lots of advice!

We have had some very stormy weather up here so our sphagnum is pretty wet. This is what is making the poles a bit heavier. All you need to do is let them dry out a bit (or you can give them a wee squeeze), you will find the pole much lighter when it loses some water weight. I don’t recommend trying to get rid of all the water, as you want them moist.

I hope this helps and you will reconsider using them once you have let them lose some moisture.

      Thank you,

      Craig

Q & A

I’m about to order the moss stick extension but do these come with metal clips to attach, if not, do you sell them? I did try to check on your website but couldn’t find any. Felicity Ward asked on February 5, 2024

Hi Felicity,

Thank you for your question. The moss pole extensions screw into the base pole/other extensions.

They don't use clips or anything like that and are not compatible with poles made anywhere else. Our moss poles are completely our own design, handmade by us.

So if yo do not have a base pole already you would need to add one of those to your cart and then you can add the extensions as needed.

Let me know if I can provide any more help.

Thank you,

Craig

Can you attach more than one extension pole? ie can you attach an extension to an extension? Once extended, are the poles strong enough to support a full sized monstera without the risk of toppling? Oliver Todd asked on September 25, 2023

Yes, I have tested with 3 x 60cm and it is fine. If you need to move the plant just make sure to support the pole so it doesn't start bouncing about.

There isn't any issue with supporting the plant when stationary and it could potentially go higher.

The poles screw into each other. The extensions are all double ended with a steel screw in one end and a hole in the other. The bass pole has a stake area and a hole on top.

I made them this way as the cone stack style I have seen in other poles can get really loose and wobbly.

How long can you leave the moss before it will dry out and die? Oliver Todd asked on September 25, 2023

This depends on the environment. If you have a humidifier by the pole then a little spray down once or twice a week is enough. If you don't, I recommend watering every couple of days. It's easier to make it a routine wee misting than let it totally dry out first.

However, moss is really resilient and dead looking moss can be revived in time. It also remains functional but less effective if it does dry out, more like a coir pole.

We include a QR with some helpful information on a swing tag on the moss pole to help you install and maintain it.

Are the extendable moss poles more like the 'skinny' poles or 'chunky' poles? Holly Taylor asked on September 22, 2022

Hi, thank you for your question!

The extendable poles sort of sit in between, with a generous covering of moss. This is so that whenever you order an extension it will look 'right' with the existing moss pole.

Of course, as they are handmade there is some degree of variation but after making so many they are pretty much uniform in size.

Hope this helps!

How do I measure what size pole I need please? Fay asked on August 7, 2022

Hi Fay,

Thank you for your question. To get the right size of pole, measure the plant from the soil to the top leaf. If your stems are going off to the side then pull those up if possible to get a better idea of the height of the plant when the pole will be on it.

Then add 10cm for the part of the pole going in the soil. You may also want to order a pole a little taller than the plant, this is up to your preference.

So for example, your plant is 80cm from the soil to the top leaf. So we would advice a 90cm pole (which would be a 60cm base plus a 30cm extension).

Hope this helps!

Thanks,

Craig
